Canadian Bumpies, where do you shop?

I'm American, but married to a Canadian and we're travelling to Vancouver next week to visit DH's family.  While we're in North America (we live in Ukraine), I'd like to stock up on some things for this LO (newborn clothes, a stroller, a new set of medela nipples).  I assumed that I could order most things from amazon.ca before we arrive like I usually do when I go back to the US, but I've found the selection to be much more limited.

So, help me out, what sites do you use for online shopping? Do you only use .ca sites or is it sometimes worth it to use US vendors (like Carter's) and just have things shipped to Canada?  Also, recommendations for where to look for strollers?  I'd like to get the City Select with the double attachments, but the ones I've seen online are $200 more than the same stroller in the US.

Also, for any Vancouver moms, any "must-dos" with a 15 month old?

TIA!

  • There are Carter's/ Oshkosh stores here too. Also baby gap, childrens place, gymboree, Hudsons Bay are my main places for baby clothes. I would go to a babies r us for medela nipples/ stroller. Or even walmart had a .ca

I'm not from Vancouver but love Stanley park if your LO still likes their stroller and you want to get out for a walk.

  • Go to a Superstore and check out the Joe baby clothes! I don't know if you get Joe in the US or not, but there are some ADORABLE baby clothes there!

  • Thanks Ladies! Carters has a .ca site, but you can't do online orders unfortunately and suprisingly the site doesn't list a store in Vancouver.  We received a Joe Fresh outfit for DD from DH's sister and it's one of my favorites, so I'm happy to hear its a large line!

  • Also Children's Place.   Toys'r'us/Babies'r'us has strollers, etc. of course.   Instead of just looking at Vancouver, check the surrounding area!   There is probably something close, as Vancouver itself as a city is quite small, I think.   There is a couple of specialty baby shops as well in the Vancouver area, ex. https://www.tjskids.com/.

American vs Canadian car seat rules differ a bit so that could be one reason that things are more expensive here, as they have to be certified in Canada.

As for things to do, we just took our 27 month old to the aquarium.  She REALLY LIKED IT!   Also, last year at about 15 months we took her to here https://www.ecodairy.ca/ which is definitely in the Vancouver area!  It was fun and about her level.

I live in BC but NOT in the Vancouver area.

  • @arctic_seal thanks for the tips!  DD is into fish these days (well mostly making fish faces), so the aquarium just may blow her mind!

  • I agree with Joe Fresh! Sign up for online emails and they'll send u a coupon and you'll get info on sales. I find Carter's cheaper in the states especially outlets.

  • I love snugglebugz.ca. They're based in Ontario but deliver across the country with free shipping. Excellent customer service and they shipped my Uppababy Vista to me in 2 days!

  • Check out west coast kids too. Cute store, definitely have one in Vancouver. MEC has some cute winter gear for babies. Unfortunately I think everything is more $$ in Canada than US. We got our city select on kijiji (like craigslist) for $400 - 2 seats & all accessories!
  • I used to live in Vancouver, so I can tell you that the Superstore is not downtown, but furtheroutside the actual Vancouver area, more so on your way to Richmond, etc. But it will for sure be worth the drive/bus ride as I LOVE Joe clothes for babies!!!

My Mom bought my nephew the cutest sweater ever that was knit and had a monocle and mustach printed on it...I almost died!

  • The difference in currency doesn't help either when it comes to US pricing vs. CAN prices...
  • There isn't a Superstore downtown but there is a Joe Fresh stand alone store. There's also one in North Van, I don't know if either of them have kids clothes too or just adults.

I also second Tj's and West Coast Kids for strollers and clothes and other baby items. There's a few other specialty stores like HipBaby, Dandelion Kids etc but they mostly just sell clothing.

We also shop at H&M, they have fairly reasonable prices and their clothes are super cute.

  • It's in Burnaby, but Metotown is probably the biggest mall in the Vancouver area. It's really not far out of Vancouver city and has a lot of the stores mentioned here. Gap, old navy, Gymboree, Childrens Place, H&M, target, babysrus and a Superstore for the Joe brand. A lot of higher end stores too that it haven't been in:P I don't think you will find a Carters there but other than that, if you can handle the crowds and a big confusing mall, it's a pretty great one stop shop. Downtown has a pretty great shopping district too but it's changed a lot since I moved from Vancouver so I'm not quite as familiar with the stores they have now. Agree with other pp that kijiji is a good place to look for gear if you're ok with used.
