Breast pump

I found out I have two options for a breast pump through my insurance. I've got the ameda purely yours and the Medela pump in style. I've used a smaller Medela pump with my first baby. I hated it. I used a hospital grade one when my son was in the nicu. I got a ton of milk and it was pretty fast and pain free. Apparently both pumps are hospital grade and very good. I've been looking at reviews and videos all morning trying to decide and thought I would ask what you guys think. Thanks so much for your help. Joy

Re: Breast pump

  • I have a Medela PISA, I like it. Used it for nearly a year with DS.

I used a Medela PISA as well with my first and will be getting another one with this LO because insurance will give a free one. I liked it fine. No experience with Ameda but heard some bad things about it on another board. Just fyi, neither one of those two is hospital grade (if I understand the term correctly) but they should be great.

ETA: ok i just googled what 'hospital grade' means and seems like there is no one clear definition or FDA rules around that. It could mean a 'multiple user' pump (which these two are not) or one with really good suction (which these are, though there are better I think).
  • I'm not sure. The medical supply company and the insurance company both said that they are medical grade so who knows.

  • I used an old (it was like 5? years old at the time) Medela PIS from a friend who used it through two kids and it worked great for me and great for another friend I lent it to after that. It is not hospital grade in terms of being self-contained and multi-user, but we are close friends and I was comfortable sharing. Now I have insurance that will cover a new one so I'm going to get a new PIS, but if not I would still use the old one. FWIW, my friend, the third user of the pump, said it worked better than the pump in the hospital.

  • The medela lactina is the hospital grade pump, the Pisa is a nice pump. I used it for 10 months while pumping at work.
I did also use the lactina, I liked both. I think the lactina did have a little better suction but the Pisa worked just fine too.
The ameda i have no personal experience with.

Same here.  I was blessed because a friend at work told me his wife opened hers up, and then changed her mind, she didn't want to even try BFing, so since they couldn't return it, they sold it to me for $100.
