Road Trip

We are heading to the beach this week with DS and its his first long car ride. About 6.5 hours. My thought is to drive though the night so hopefully he will sleep most of the time. On the way back, it will be during the day. But I worry about his head flopping down in his car seat while hes sleeping so should I bring a travel pillow? Or any other tips/suggestions?

Re: Road Trip

  • We just did a car trip for the same amount of time. We brought a DVD player and played her favorite tv shows and that worked wonders. The only thing I would do differently is I would have put a night diaper on her. She was doing so well that we didn't want to stop and double check her diaper so when we finally took a break it had leaked and we had to change her outfit.
  • Loading the player...
  • Nighttime diaper definitely as PP said.  And we used a DVD player for DD on a long trip - it delayed her fussing to get out of the carseat.  Also, I sat in the back with her so I could give her food or a bottle if needed.  I don't like to let her snack if no one is in the backseat just in case she chokes.
  • We drove to the beach in April and it took about that long.  We left around by 10am.  Stopped for lunch between 12-1 which let DS get out of the car for a bit, and then he napped for most of the remaining time.  We really didn't do much extra for the ride than we would for an afternoon running errands on the weekend.
  • We drove from PA to KY when oue LO was 9mos old.  He was still nursing at the time, so when he woke up at 1am to nurse, I jut put him int he car following our session and we left.  The car actually helpped him sleep longer.  He normally slept until about 6am, but he slept until 8 in the car.  then we stopped every 2 hours to let him eat, play, etc for about 30-45 mins.  It def extended our drive time, but he was really good for the whole 12 hour trip.

We didn't use a travel pillow for him - we had him in the convertable car seat by then and we just set it in the most laid back position for him to sleep in.  I didn't notice too much of a head flop.  If i can suggest somethig to you, we bought one of the mirrors that hooks onto the head rest of the back seat, except we got one that played music and lit up with a remote control.  When kiddo got fussy, we would hit the music and he calmed right down until we were able to find a good rest stop.  I'm not sure if your guy is still rear facing.
