When to follow up, if at all?

I've only been in my current job 6 months (though I worked here before several years ago - I came back late last year), but saw an opportunity with another company that I've been dying to get into so I applied and a former colleague that works there also gave my resume to the hiring manager.  I have not job hunted in a "traditional" way for a long time (current role I was recruited by a friend since I worked here before and just before that, similar - referred by a friend and process was quick/easy).

I'm a really good fit - i have both the types of backgrounds they are looking for and am within the salary range.  I had the phone screen with HR last Thursday and haven't heard a thing.  Since I haven't got a "thanks but no thanks" letter does that mean I'm still being considered?  Or could it mean I'm out?   Is it okay to follow up with the HR girl tomorrow since it will have been more than a week or should I just sit tight and wait to hear either way?  I don't want to seem pushy or desperate especially since I am not super unhappy in my current job and have only been with it 6 months.  I just know I'd like the environment and type of work at this other company much better so want to be seriously considered.  I know they will have a lot of applicants too so maybe they are still sifting through all of them?

  • I think it's ok to follow up since you are just dealing with HR people at this stage.

I don't see any problem with a single follow-up call after a week has gone by. Depending on your position applied for, it may be something they actually want to see.

Did you ask about timing in your interview? Some companies have a very quick process, others are protracted. It's helpful to get a sense of their timing so you know when to follow up or if you've been eliminated from the running. If you haven't done this yet, I would do it in your follow-up call.
@K3am I asked during my phone screen what the timing was like to fill the role and she mentioned she was meeting with the hiring manager to review candidates the next day which would have been last Friday (I'm thinking phone screens were all last week?).   She asked where I was with my search and even though I'm not looking anywhere else I said "I specifically want to work for a ___ company so I have been speaking with a couple but (this company) is my #1 choice by far."

I will email her tomorrow morning to follow I think.  Thanks ladies!
