Any other exotropia babies out there?

Since birth LO has had a wandering eye. When she was first born it was very noticeable, though not constant, and I wanted to give her time for her eye muscles to strengthen because I read it's not uncommon for newborns. Over the months it has significantly improved, but her right eye does still turn outwards sometimes. She saw an eye doctor today and was officially diagnosed with exotropia and we were set up with an appointment with a pediatric specialist next week.

I was wondering if any other ladies have had experience with their LO's having the same issue? Treatment options vary from an eye patch, to glasses, to surgery. I'm praying she won't have to go through surgery but it's definitely a possibility.

No experience, but a friends baby had it. They just patched the good eye and with in a few months it was fine. No vision issues later on.

    Best wishes.

  • My LO doesn't have a lazy eye, but she does have a cataract in her left eye. We have to patch her good eye so the cataract eye doesn't lose its abilty to see/brain to use it. Patching is nbd if you have to do it. It's just like a little band aid for a few hours a day. I hope everything ends up ok!

Hi. I haven't posted in forever but saw this and had gone through so I thought I would share. My oldest had this. Right around one year her one eye was noticeably turned. We worked with the pedi specialist for about 6 months patching to strengthen the muscle in her bad eye. She didn't like the patches much but she would wear them.

When she was 18 months she had the eye surgery. It was outpatient and very short. They knocked her out and cut the eye muscles and reattach them to better "center" the eye. Aside from being disorientated when she woke up she did really well. We went home and she ate lunch and played like nothing happened. She did have a black eye and some broken blood vessels in her eye but it was way better than I expected.

After surgery she had to start wearing glasses. With the glasses you could see no turning of her eye but when she took them off or when she got tired it would turn slightly. She had follow ups every 6 months and things are going great. She is now 9 and still wears glasses but has no noticeable turn out.

The key is to get it early before the brain is trained to not use info from that eye and it can then deteriorate very quickly. So I'm sorry your going through this but am glad you caught it early. I hope you are one of those where patching takes care of it but if you do have to have surgery I hope it goes as well as ours did.
  • Thank you everyone for feedback, I really appreciate it.

@EmR22 I'm glad to hear your DD was totally fine after surgery. I'm hoping it doesn't have to go to that point, but I'm kind of expecting it will based on what I've found researching the issue so far.

When your daughter got her glasses were they covered under your medical insurance or was that something for vision insurance? I am going to ask the Dr when we see him next week about that as well, but just curious how it worked for you because we don't currently have vision, just medical, and I'm thinking H needs to add the vision ASAP.

Our vision insurance only covers exams but actual glasses had to come out of pocket. We use flexible spending money for it. So I would check what exactly vision coverage covers. My other piece of advise if/when you need glasses is to find a place that offers "insurance coverage" for broken frames and/or scratched lenses. We had to pay $20 extra for her pair and then they would replace the frames if she broke them or the lenses if she scratched them which for us was essential. When she was so little she didn't have a sense of "be careful" with them. At one point she even took them off and literally scrapped them on our front concrete step. They were so scratched you could see out of them! Good luck!
