Mixing Breastmilk With Solids

DD just turned 6 months and we've introduced solids. So far we've done squash, oatmeal and avocado. She took the avocado straight up and loved it. I mixed some breastmilk with baby oatmeal and she devoured it and we had to experiment a little with squash. She finally ate the squash after it was diluted with more breast milk. How much milk and for how long do you mix solids with breastmilk? Can I use water instead? I ask because I pump an extra 1-2 ounces a day, but if I ever have a bad pumping day I may not have any milk to mix with the solids. Is this just in the beginning that you mix breastmilk with food? I'm so clueless about solids so I'm learning as I go!

  • You don't have to mix any if you don't want it just adds calories and helps them adjust to the taste. I was also told by pedi that cows milk and other dairy products are ok at 6 months, as far as solids are concerned, but not to drink. Like we give LO pancakes made with cows milk.

@bootsorhearts ;;) it wouldn't have occurred to me, except someone mentioned in FFFC. A few weeks later, I was bleary-eyed, in the same boat, and decided to give it a try. It worked. Didn't need sweetener either.
Not sure wether to be impressed or horrified haha!

  • Haha, wow--once the office ran out of creamer and I joked I was going to use my pumped milk in my coffee, but I was afraid to. Can't believe you did it!

Adding cow's milk sounds interesting--DD has her 6 month visit on Monday so I'm going to ask pedi about it.

I'm glad to know that I don't need to use just breast milk!
