3rd Trimester

Ultra sound at 39 weeks

Today I had my 39 week check-up. The nurse checked the heartbeat and it was around 160, which I thought was high since his is usually around 140. But she didn't seemed concerned at all though. Then the doctor did an internal check and said I was not dilated at all. (very disappointing since 3 weeks ago I was told I was at 1 cm) anyway then before he leaves he says he want me to go for an ultra sound to check the fetal growth. I know I should have asked more questions but for some reason I didn't! Now im sitting at home stewing over the fact that he wants me to go for an ultra sound this late in the game. It doesn't seem necessary since he said everything looked good! Im curious if any of you have been sent for ultra sounds at 39 weeks? And of course im doing the whole worrying thing wondering if it was a concern that his heartbeat was high? I guess he would have told me if there was a problem. I go to a group practice and always have had midwives, this was the first time I saw this doctor. He seemed in a rush and I was certainly not impressed with his measurement of my cervix (of course that is probably only because I was hoping by this point I would have made a bit more progress!) Anyway sorry for the rambling, I kinda needed to vent and hear what some other mammas have to say!

  • i wouldn't worry too much. ( i know, easier said than done) if it was anything serious, you would have been sent directly from the ob's office to get the u/s.

    good luck!

  • I went from being 1 cm dilated last time to full blown labor a day later.  I wouldn't worry too much about that part.  As far as the growth ultrasound goes, I don't think that's cause for alarm either.  The heartbeat fluctuates just like ours does throughout the day, so they probably just caught it when it was elevated a little.  :)  160 is still a perfectly normal range!  I wouldn't worry a bit!
On our way to baby#2!  Praying for a healthy and happy delivery next June!
  • Thank you for the advice, I know its something I probably do not need to worry about! And I have heard many stories where woman had no progress and then all of sudden are in labor. So I know it could happen to me that way, its just that you kinda get to a point where you truly feel like labor will not happen for you! :) Im just really hoping to go into labor on my own and not have to be induced!

  • 160 isn't a high heart rate so don't let that concern you. My little guy has been in the upper 150's-lower 160's this whole pregnancy. Hope that helps to ease your mind some!

  • Yes that does put my mind at ease! Im feeling much better about the whole doctor visit. I think im just quite hormonal and ready to have this little guy in my arms! I know he will come when he is ready and in reality he will be here soon!

  • They could be checking fluid levels and for calcification/aging of the placenta.

This.  Im 38 weeks and some days and I got sent for an ultrasound yesterday after my weekly because i was measuring big.  I have extra fluid.  Baby is measuring right were he/she needs to be.
