Car Seat for Grandparents

I was wondering if anyone had a good recommendation for a car seat for my MIL.  DD is 18 months and 24 lbs.  They really wouldn't be normally driving her around, but this summer DH and I would like to be able to give them that option if they are watching her.  I don't want to sacrifice safety for price; however, keeping in mind that this is a "once in a while" use, don't want to break the bank either. I'd also like the car seat to last as long as possible. Thoughts? Thanks!!

How tall is she?  The Cosco Apt is longer lasting than the Scenera for a little more money but they both can be a pain to install.  Does the car it's going in have latch? Would the seat stay permanently installed?  If not I'd probably opt to spend more money for something that's easier.  We have a Scenera and once it's in, it stays because it takes me forever to get a solid install.  Since she's over 22 pounds, the Safety 1st Guide 65 is a good choice because it allows for a more upright install at that angle and is very long lasting for rear facing.

  • We have a seat that stays in our car, one that stays in MIL's car, and then a third one for when she goes with anyone else. So for the third seat we wanted something light weight, easy to install, and inexpensive. She uses it maybe twice a month?

We went with the Evenflo Tribute. It's like $60. Install is pretty fast and easy, as is changing where the harness is threaded when the kid gets bigger. For the Tribute select it looks like the RF limits are 5-40lbs, 19-37 inches, then FF it's 22-40lbs and 28-40 inches.
The bold is very important for an extra seat!  I would be worried to death about them not knowing how to install it, so make sure it's easy to do.

No one installs j's car seats except DH and I. If we did teach someone else, we would teach them with the belt over LATCH because it's much easier with the belt. I think we fought the LATCH install with our MyRide65 for an hour. Belt? Literally 3 minutes.
Same with our Recaro, belt is way easier than latch with it.  My Max Cosi though it the other way around, the belt is a PITA.

we have a safety 1st guide 65 as the spare seat.  i install it and just leave it in my dad's car.  it's lightweight, rf to 40lbs, ff to 65lbs, and compact yet the shell is pretty tall so it should last several years.

     $80 at walmart.

eta:  it may require the use of a pyramid of pool noodles for a RF install in some cars, tho.  not a setback imo, just an extra step.

however long the night, dawn will break.

  • We only have one cosco scenera for use in all the cars we need to put DS in.  I install it in the weekend car every Saturday and switch back on Sunday nights.

I never found it to be hard to install.  You just pull out then up like a tie-down strap.  Now you guys have me thinking I'm doing it wrong.

  • Thanks everyone! @TheEmpireNeedsYou I'm going to look into the Tribute.  DH and FIL would install it...and actually @Dreadloc we had to do the Marathon with a pool noodle in our Outback...so no biggie.

@uconnhuskie007 HI!!!! Been lurking but been so busy with work...Grandma in home officially (it's not a bad thing...just more time visiting, etc) and I CANNOT take out my damn phone without my little "baby" screaming for it! Lol! Hope you're well!!!
  • Just wanted to second the Evenflo Tribute. Very easy to take in and out of most cars, we flew with it and gave it to family when they were driving her...lightweight too.
