She usually sleeps on her own but today is her first time climbing out and she's crying/hyperventilating like it's her first time napping alone. I don't get it. What's going on? Any thoughts?
I've yet to experience this in all my years working with children but I do know others that have had children that constantly climb out of their crib or playpen. I think the most common way to stop it is to go in, put them back in the crib and leave. Don't speak or interact. It can take many, many, many times of going in and lying the child back down before they just stop doing it. They need to know that every single time the climb out you will lie them back down. Another option, (easiest if you have a video monitor) is to hover out of sight but nearby and firmly say 'no climbing' as soon as they start to try and climb out. Again repeat over and over.
Note that all the above is WAY easier if it is not your own child and they are not hysterical. This is more for children that just want to get out of nap and climb out to be funny.
If this is a one off thing and she was greatly upset at the time then I'd try to figure out what was going on before trying the above.
My daughter has been doing this for months! It is quite frustrating and the only thing I have found is to buy an XL sleep sack and put it on her backwards. She calls it her sleeping bag and likes sleeping with it now.
Thank you everyone, all of these are very helpful, I have a video monitor and it helps A LOT.
JandAcofee, I feel horrible bc it seemed that way so I ended up not letting her nap and stayed with me the whole time. She cried so differently today. But I hope this all goes away and it seem like she's fine tonight, thank God.
