My 3.5 yo got mad at me today because I wouldn't let him have a Popsicle for dinner and he pulled the "I don't love you" card for the first time.

I know he doesn't mean it, but holy crap does that hurt. I keep hearing him say it in my head. I need hugs.

Oh!!!! I'm so sorry. I know exactly how you feel.

My 3yo was upset because he wasn't allowed to have candy before he ate dinner. He looked me dead in the eyes and said, "I'm so mad at you! I don't love you, Mommy!" I tried to hide how bad it hurt me and I said, "That's not very nice, M. We shouldn't get that upset over candy. If you eat your dinner you can have one piece afterwards." He replied, "I don't even care."

I think they just reach a point where they don't necessarily know how to direct their anger/frustrations. And it certainly comes out in ways that are sometimes awful. But don't ever doubt his love for you, Mama. Maybe just try redirecting his thoughts... "I know you don't mean that. You love me, you just don't like what I've told you." That has helped M from ever saying that to me again. Now it's, "I don't like that I can't have a cookie!" Works for us. In the meantime, I'm so sorry you are hurt so bad. ((((Huge hugs))))

That's not cool little Keags! You know he didn't mean it, but I'd make a big deal of how much that hurt you, so he is less likely to do it again. That's what would work for DD1 at least.

Big hugs. You're not alone. We had a similar incident last night where she also tried to rake my eyes out with her wolverine-like claws. It's so hard. I was in tears while DH got her calmed down and in bed.
