BP During Labor - Question for New or STM

I'm wondering how your blood pressure (BP) during labor compared to your BP during regular office visits.  STMs and new FTMs, feel free to chime in.  Particularly interested to hear experiences from people who had elevated (but not high) BP during office visits.

Here's the story of why I'm asking:  I'm planning to birth at a freestanding birth center.  My MW told me today that I should be mentally prepared to be transferred to the hospital when I arrive in labor because my BP has been elevated, but not high (ie. 120-130s/80s) for the past few weeks during my office visits.  If my BP is above 140/90 when I arrive in labor, and it doesn't go down with rest, I will need to be transferred to the hospital.  She told me that there is a "strong possibility" of this happening because BP tends to raise when in pain/stressed.

I certainly understand her point, but was hoping to get some idea if others saw this effect with their BP while in labor.  Thanks in advance!

Re: BP During Labor - Question for New or STM

  • My Bp went up during labor and I had a normal Bp my whole pregnancy. It caused concerns with my LO Bp and they had to keep me on oxygen from pretty much the time I got admitted thru delivery. My Bp is still elevated 3 days later but it's getting better. Hope that helps!

Not quite the same as your situation, I'll share my story.  With my daughter, I had perfect BP all through my pregnancy, but the first check of my BP in the hospital when I was there for my induction was super elevated and that continued through delivery and after (sometimes scary high).  I ended up having to go on two medications, stay in the hospital 5 days and have a month's worth of weekly appointments with the nephrologist.  I was slowly weaned off the medications and my blood pressure has been perfect ever since.  I'm scared that it's going to happen again with this delivery though :(

I hope you get lucky and your BP stays normal!

  • I had pre-e prior to pregnancy and my blood pressure was usually in the 140s/mid-80s range on the regular. During delivery it sky rocketed and my babies heart rates went down, so we had to have an emergency c-section. I hope yours stays nice to you, but I'd heed the advice of your midwife and plan to go to the hospital juuust in case. Good luck!

I had elevated bp at the end of my pregnancy and then developed pre-e so they induced. During labor it was high the entire time (despite the magnesium) however when I was pushing it dropped to normal ranges. Immediately after it went back up and has been high or elevated since (almost 3 weeks pp).

I think everyone is different so stay positive and focused on you and LO. Also, anytime I was laying on my left side prior to the pre-e it would significantly drop. Maybe spend sometime resting on your side?

  • Mine was crazy elevated this time. I didn't go into labor but for most of my stay my bp was extremely high.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Thank you all for sharing your stories. I had PreE with DS, which is part of the reason why my MWs are being so careful with my BP. This PG is going much better so far, though. I'll let you all know how it goes. I'm currently waiting to see if the contractions I'm having are going to pickup or fizzle out, so it might not be too much longer!

Good luck either way, @lisagde! Hope it ends up being a non-issue.

  • @lisagde, mine was very high between 30-34 weeks before I was induced. They told me if my BP was too high and couldn't be controlled by meds they would induce ASAP.

When I was induced, I was on 1200 mg of BP meds when I was induced but my heart rate dropped after 50 hours of labor and the epidural so they took me off the meds to let it go back up. My case was extreme, but, I was under a lot of medical care and pretty much never left alone so I felt safe.

Good luck and I hope your BP behaves!
