NBR: Phone Noises

Looking for opinions: If you're in a small/crowded space with strangers (ex: a waiting room or airport terminal) do you find it rude if people don't silence their phones? What about beeps when clicking buttons (the tap tap of typing, for example ).

ETA: created using mobile and it posted before I could add "SS" or "No, not rude".

Re: NBR: Phone Noises

  • I ask because I was telling a friend this weekend how annoying it is that every morning one of my coworkers is on her phone texting and her button taps make clicky noises. I feel it's rude and my friend thought I was being ridiculous. This same friend would not think twice about talking (loudly) on her phone in a crowded room, though, which is something I wouldn't do.

  • I clicked yes.. but only because there was no option for no. TBH, I never notice this. ..but that may be because I listen to my iPod in situations like this.
  • SS. Neither bothers me.

  • Interesting how across the board people feel about this. Apparently I wait in abnormally quiet waiting rooms. I don't expect people to not use their phones in waiting rooms etc ( I certainly do), but I find it inconsiderate when people don't silence their phones. I don't need to hear your game sound effects or your videos playing. I also don't need to hear the beeps of your texting (to clarify, I'm meaning the actual button sound effects, not just the sound of the buttons clicking). This is something that has always bothered me - pregnant or not. I wouldn't walk into a room with a radio going, even on low volume - I guess I see phone noises as the same thing.

  • I think for me it's more if it's continuous. Like if you are texting and your phone is going off repeatedly, then silence it. If it's just once or twice.. Doesn't bother me.

For me, it is talking loudly.

  • I'll silence my phone if I'm having a long text or hangout convo in a waiting room situation, because of all the notifications.  Honestly, I've never even thought about the keyboard noises.

We went to the movies on Saturday night and some guy in a fairly crowded theater was watching videos on his phone, full volume, before the movie started.  It annoyed me far more than I think was reasonable.  But, we're in public! You shouldn't be watching videos without headphone in public!
