How strict is the 24 hour rule?

Hi ladies!

I thawed 3 bags of milk for daycare this morning around 6:30, but LO only took 2 of them. I know the "rule" is frozen milk needs to be used within 24 hours of being completely thawed, but how strict is this?

I would like to send that 3rd bottle to daycare in the morning as her first bottle of the day (typically around 8:30-9:30). Is this okay?

  • Smell it in the morning- you will know if it's bad. If it smells sour, don't send it. If it smells okay, it's likely fine, although I might send an extra bottle or a portion of frozen BM as backup. Your LO is likely to refuse it if it tastes off.

  • I'd use it.  Sounds like it will only be a few hours over the limit, I would think it'd be fine.

  • Why don't you just send frozen milk to DC? It would eliminate this guessing game if they just defrost what LO needs when it's time to eat.

  • This happens to me sometimes. I just mark the bottle so that they use it first. DD has never had issues.

My DC provider prefers for breastmilk to be sent in bottles ready to go.

Not speaking for PP, but my dc won't allow frozen. They require that milk come to them all sealed and labeled, they heat, offer for up to 45 min (don't get me started), and then put unused in bag as waste. They will not open the bottle or handle anything beyond that.  They also do not allow any milk overnight.
Oh wow.... I had no idea how much our daycare spoils us!  They let us store a whole stash of frozen milk in their freezer.
