BFing pain

I'm not sure what's up, but over the last 24 hours or so nursing on my left has become really painful. I don't think it's LOs latch, but I'm getting painful pulling sensations while she's nursing. Everything LOOKS fine from the outside, but after nursing my breast is really tender.

Could this be a clogged duct or something? What should I do about it? Would lanolin help something like this temporarily?

Re: BFing pain

  • It sounds kinda like the pain that I get with a clog. I nurse and pump from the hurt side more. Like if I pump I nurse after and vice versa. Also warm compress and massage. Good luck mine usually go away pretty quick.

  • Sounds like what I get with a clogged duct.
Pain in the affected area, and sometimes (possibly when it starts to clear?) a strange feeling in my nipple that I can only describe as being like what I'd imagine a thick string with knots in it being pulled to my nipple would feel like.

Try warmth and massage on the painful area while BFing or pumping. It may take a few sessions (all day) to clear, but mine don't usually last more than a couple feedings. (I only had one clog that lasted two days)
  • yea, sounds like a clog to me. I'm working on my 3rd milk blister/clog right now. The first one I had the pain before it got to the point that I could feel the clog, the second 2 I didn't have any pain when nursing, just got the lump. Just keep nursing/pumping, try a warm wash cloth before nursing or a hot shower and drink lots of water.
  • Yes sounds like a clogged duct. Please follow PPs advice and pump it out as often as you can so it clears. If it's been a while it can turn into mastitis and that's not fun! Red area and starting to feel awful (shivering sweats etc) means mastitis and get sorted ASAP! Hope you manage to sort it out and you're back to pain free feeding :)
  • Thanks ladies! I'm going to try warm compresses/pumping for the rest of the day, if it's not feeling better by Friday I may try to see my OB.
