When did LO stop needing a night feed?

Poll time. Just curious?

At the advice of our pedi, we weaned DS1 from his one night feed at 6 months. He had previously been sleeping through the night, then started waking again around 5 months, and we gave him a bottle at that wake up out of habit. I knew he was ready because he was a chubby baby and a good sleeper. I know my pedi will probably advise the same for ds2 at 6 months, but I don't think he's ready. He seems starving at his night bottle. Also, your baby might not decide on his own. You might have to decide if you want to wean. If you lurk on the toddler boards like 12-24 months, people discuss babies that are still up to eat in the MOTN. I personally would night wean before age 12 months when they are less aware. Sorry, I went on and on! I just don't want to get up in the night for another year! :-)

  • M was sleeping through the night until we went out of town two weeks ago and now he's back up once around 2 for a bottle...he seems starving. The pedi suggested trying a bottle of water instead, since he's almost 18lbs and was sleeping through the night. Not sure how I feel about it since he seems starving and he actually lost weight between his last sick appt. and his well visit Monday. We'll see. :-S
  • Our LO stopped waking to eat around 6 weeks. That seems to be rare though. She does have an early morning "wake up" though, where she just wakes up, plays a little in her crib, then eventually fusses for her paci, then goes right back to sleep once I give it to her. She wakes for the day around 6:30 usually.
  • Surprisingly our pedi told us he no longer needed to nurse at night at four months. I didn't wean him from night feedings until a week and a half ago when we started sleep training. After four days, he sleeps from 7:30-7 at the earliest before eating again.

So, for those who weaned off night feeding.....did you just refuse to nurse?

    *legit question.

Since our pedi told us at his four month appt that his stomach was big enough to go all night I felt okay with the decision at 5.5 months to have him go all night. The first few nights, I said it would go to him one time at night and it would have to be after 3 am. We did that for a couple nights and then he just started sleeping longer and eventually not waking at all. I guess I just figured if he couldn't get himself back to sleep after a while then he may genuinely be hungry. There were a couple times I went to him before 3 because he had a different cry than just fussy or disagreeing with how we were doing things. After this long, I know my baby and his different types of cries which then helped me decide if I needed to go to him. I haven't needed to go to him at night for almost a week now.

This is exactly what my pedi said too, but I wasn't comfortable refusing the boob MOTN at that point. He stopped on his own around 4.5/5 months. If he wakes up now I try everything before feeding him, because chances are he isn't really hungry and something else woke him up.

I wasn't comfortable with it then either. I waited until almost six months but then it got so bad being up every hour to two hours and I knew it was out of habit.

@amber0389‌ Not dumb at all! He is bf and sometimes he gets solids but it's really only if we get around to it because we are going by "under one just for fun". He goes all night with or without having solids during the day. I nurse him right before he goes down for the night.

We have been doing sleep training. LO still wakes up to eat every 4 hrs. I tried letting him cry to see if he would go back to sleep. Nope. I figure he must be legit hungry. I read on a sleep training blog that CIO sleep training and night weaning should be separate events. I don't have the heart to possibly starve him (not saying any of you have starved your babes) Once we have this sleep training down I will attempt to night wean. @bty19‌ The blog I read recommends decreasing the time of the feed gradually over a few days until you can just drop one all together.
How does one know the difference though between sleep training and night wean??  I mean, isn't sleep training letting them CIO to put themselves to sleep? If they wake in the middle of the night, should you not let them CIO then - isn't that still sleep training??

@bty19‌ our pedi recommended CIO and said to pick one time when you choose to go to LO to nurse. That way you are comfortable knowing they are CIO just to get out the frustration of figuring out how to get to sleep as opposed to be hungry.

ETA: if you go to LO every time they wake and cry at night, they will just develop sleep association with eating and will become dependent on that to sleep (that was our problem). They also will have a harder time being trained because they know you will come every time they cry.

What time are you all doing the last bottle? LO gets a bottle and then bed around 6:45 or 7. We've been doing what started out as a dream feed ~10:30 that gets us to 6am, but pedi recommended trying to cut that one out. Anyone else with an earlyish bedtime?

    @serend‌
Lo goes to bed at 7:30 and I nurse him around 7:15 and after sleep training, that gets him to at least 7 am sometimes later

@KMKaiser07‌ Thanks! That's promising to hear. He's been going to bed later and later, it used to be closer to 6:15/6:30. We haven't had to do any serious ST yet and were able to remove a motn feeding around 3 1/2 months, so I'm hoping we can do the same with the late night bottle.

Our pedi assured us his stomach was big enough to go all night at four months. I wasn't comfortable doing it then but after another month and a half of nursing every hour to two hours, something needed to change. That's when we decided CIO was the way for us to go and the first couple nights I only went in one time (so he went cold turkey from nursing all night long) and it was whenever he woke after 3 am. Then he just started sleeping longer on his own and no longer wakes. There is hope :)

  • Omg what am I doing wrong? My lo is up 2-3 times a night still. She shares a room with DD1 so I don't let her CIO or fuss much. I just automatically feed her.

We just have one so CIO was an option and it worked. Would you have a temporary place you could put LO to do CIO or let you dd1 go to grandparents for some special sleepovers while you sleep train be it CIO or some other method?

I really wish we could do some sort of sleep training but I don't see how without waking DS. I think DD would be receptive if I put her down drowsy and just let her fuss a little bit. I think I'm going to try and just rock her when she wakes during the night opposed to immediately feeding her.

  • Those of you that have cut out a night feeding... When you did feed LO how much were they eating at night, (MOTN)? Also, how many ounces are they getting during the day? Our LO goes to bed at around 8 and wakes up like clock work at 11,2, and 6 to eat. At 11 and 2 he eats anywhere from 2 to 4 ounces.
  • Wish I could help you out @MGalles‌ but I nurse on demand all day and his last feeding is at 7:15 until he wakes up which is anywhere between 7 and 9. Prior to STN he was nursing every two hours but would usually just take
one side before going back to bed.

  • LO goes down for the night 6:30-7. In the last two weeks, he's had four nights where he slept thru. He used to wake up 2x a night and we've been down to 1x a night (waking between 2:30-4) for a solid four weeks now. He she'd that in his own. Pedi said by 6 months she want him not feeding at night and I think we'll be there by the end of this month, since we have had a few full nights recently.
