Teething troubles - any advice welcome!

My LO is 15 months and is currently working on 2 molars and a front bottom all at once.  He is ok during the day and doesn't seem to fussy, but at night, it is another story.  For the past 3 nights, he has woken up every 30-45 mins crying and the only way we can get him back to sleep is for DH or myslef to sleep with him in the spare room.  Prior to the molars starting to come in, he was a 10-11 hour/night sleeper.  Now we are lucky if anyone gets more than 6.

We are giving him baby motrin and baby tylenol for the pain before bed, but when he wakes up at night, he refuses it (to be honest, I am not sure he ever really wakes up - just screams in his sleep).

Any suggestions for helping him sleep more comfortably?  it looks like one of these molars still has a way to go before breaking through.

  • My 15 month old is working on hers, too.  We give Tylenol before bed, if she seems to be really struggling and then again in the middle of the night, if she wakes up and can't settle.  She also sleeps right next to me and nurses upon any nighttime wake-ups.  And she wears an amber teething necklace 24/7.

  • We have done that (sleeping on the couch in DS's room) when his molars were coming in, but not anywhere as bad as you described.  We did it on 3 different nights, not in a row.  He would still cry MOTN but most nights DH could soothe him back to sleep (sometimes more than once).  I don't have any advice except that it will end soon.

  • DD does this only when she's teething and every time I take her in and it's an ear infection ... She only gets them when teeth ate cutting.

  • Neither of mine have ever had such a rough time over teething.  Are you sure it isn't an ear infection?  For DS the only symptom was suddenly becoming inconsolable at night.  And I would definitely sleep with him if that's what he needs.
  • Is he eating foods during the day that he really has to chew?  I know it's a weird question but I think this helped DD when all 4 of her molars came in (at the same time).  She would chomp on a cold carrot stick or celery stalk or just a piece of ice all day long.  Sometimes she would just sit and chew her finger.

Definitely get the ear infection ruled out just to be sure.  And go with the flow with the sleeping - we rode it out for 2 weeks then DD was back to her normal 10 hour nights.
  • The best thing I have ever done when my little one was teething/is teething is giving her those homeopathic teething tablets, i believe the brand is Hyland's Baby, BEST STUFF AROUND!!!!
  • I know most parents are reluctant to use the numbing tablets and at night we only do 1 every 2 hours(as needed) and If DD cries at night i go in and pop one in her mouth and rub her back. Then i say night night restart her music (relaxing massage music) and she goes right back to sleep!
  • are naps an issue too? DS had a double ear infection last week that I originally thought was teething.  Laying down can really hurt with an ear infection.
  • Thanks everyone for the advice!  Turns out, he had a top molar coming in too...poor kid, 3 molars at once.  I did have his ears checked out, and they were good.  He's back to sleeping normally after the molars popped through a little bit. :)
