Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Suddenly sleeping long stretches at night

My baby will be 7 weeks tomorrow. He had been waking up around 12, 3, and 5:30 to eat during the night. Then the night before last he went from 12 to 5:30 before he woke up to eat. And tonight it has been about 6 hours so far since he last ate and he is still sleeping. I know they sleep for longer periods as they get older, but I was expecting it to be more gradual and to take place when he was a little older. Is it normal for a baby his age to suddenly start sleeping for so long? I'm enjoying the longer sleeping periods, but the suddenness of his change has me a little concerned.

  • Yes, my 8 wk old has been sleeping 6-10 hrs straight for a few weeks now. My other two did not. DS was nursing every 2 hrs around the clock for months.

  • My two week old actually did this last night (from 12-6, without waking up at 3am), and it worried me a bit at first too. My aunt is a BF consultant (heavily involved in LLL), and she said it's fine as long as she's growing and feeds fine other than that. She also mentioned that it's likely that Elle will sleep longer as she gets older, which is possibly what you're experiencing.

I was told to thank the universe that I got a little extra sleep ;)

Mine did this from about 6 weeks to 12 weeks...since 12 weeks he has now been back to shorter stretches at night because he is going through some major developmental things. Enjoy while you can! He's 13.5 weeks and I'm missing all that sleep!
  • Take it while you can get it.

  • My daughter's name is Elle too! Glad it's gaining some popularity - already tired of people calling her Ellie. ;)
  • Also, what I really meant to post - she may be having a growth spurt too. Mine (11wks) suddenly started sleeping 11-7ish and I freaked. I know she'll sleep longer and longer but 8-9hrs seemed excessive... She woke up at her usual time last night ~3am to eat so I think it's a combo of a maturing digestive system and being pooped from growing so quickly. Good luck mama!
  • No need to brag :):)
Yes, completely normal as long as your LO is growing, peeing and pooping just fine.
