UPDATE IN OP: Baby weight for your 4 wk old

UPDATE:
We are at the pedi for a diff issue (spit up blood and some clots).
Just got her weighed and she is only 7.7. She was 7.4 on May 23 :(
Waiting for the pedi to come in.

Olivia will be 4 weeks today. For the past week we have gotten a lot of "she's so small comments."
It's starting to get to me (I know, kind of silly). Last night someone asked how old she wasnand then followed up with an "oh my! Why is she still so tiny? She must not be taking any milk in."

Dd was born at 7.10 and dropped to 6.8. She did have slow weight gain at first but at her 9 days pp she was up to 7.4. She doesn't get weighed again until this comingTues.

So, I'm just curious - if you know, how much did your LO weight at 4 weeks?

(I KNOW all babies are different, that some weighed +/- at birth, that if the pedi isn't worried that it's ok....so on and so on.)

Re: UPDATE IN OP: Baby weight for your 4 wk old

  • My guy was 6.14 at birth, last Monday he was 9.2. I'd say now he is pushing 10 lbs--- not sure though I haven't weighed him. He is EBF.

  • As per our pedi... They like to see newborns gain a pound and a half by one month old. So it all depends on your starting weight, but if your DD was 7.10 @ birth then by a month she should be approx 9.2.

Not sure how true this is as a FTM and when our pedi told us it was the first time I had heard of it... But hope it helps FWIW.
  • At our 2 week doctor appointment, baby was 8lbs 13 oz. He was born at 7lbs but dropped to 6lbs 8oz
  • Dd is only 3 weeks old but she was born at 7.48 and dropped to 6.11. At her 2 week appointment, she was 8 lbs.

  • My LO was 6#2oz at birth, 9#13.5 oz at one month. It's so easy to feel defensive as a new mom, honestly the only things people should say to us are "how cute!" And "you're doing a great job." All babies are different, and as PP said, most people have no idea what they're talking about. If your pedi is ok with LO's growth, that's what matters. Try not to worry-- you're doing a great job!

  • Born 7 lbs 5oz
One month dr appt 8 lbs 10oz
  • Born 7lbs 1oz, dropped to 6lbs 4oz, as of Friday, 8lbs 2oz. He was 4 weeks yesterday. I've had a few people comment how small he is and didn't believe how much he weighed. I think people forget how tiny newborns are.

  • Born at 8.2 left hospital at 7.14 then back to 8.2 at 2 week appointment now 10.2 at 4 weeks.
  • Mine was 7lbs 8oz at birth, discharged at 7lbs 9.5oz, and at two weeks was 8lbs 2oz. She hasn't been weighed "officially" since then but weighing myself holding her/not holding her she is over 9lbs now at 5 weeks. However I realize this is not accurate. FWIW I can tell a big difference in her size but people constantly comment on how small she is.

Born at 7.5. Discharged at 6.14. At almost4 weeks he's 7.12. It took him over 3 weeks to get above his birth weight. The pedi said as long as he's gaining, he's fine. He said the general rule is to gain an ounce a day. I feel like LO is small because a few friends just had 9 lb babies but I keep reminding myself that they're all different and the pedi says he's fine.

  • My baby was 8 lbs 6 oz at birth and lost a pound by the time we left the hospital. We never supplemented and he's been only breastfed. He was slow to get back to birth weight. At one month he had just gotten back to 8 lbs 8 oz. He eats all the time and I know I have good supply, so he's just a slow gainer. My pediatrician was kind of worried at first (made us come in for lots of weight checks) but the LC wasn't and I wasn't. Sure enough, now at 7 weeks he's gained another pound and looks bigger every day.

  • I completely relate! People are always saying how tiny DD is, asking how old she is and whether she was a preemie. She was born at 40w4d and weighed 7#11, so no... I think she just appears tiny because she has sweet, delicate little facial features. And, she was a little scrawny for a few weeks. She lost 10 oz in the hospital, then only gained about 2 oz a week for the first couple weeks. I'm EBF, was struggling with it a little, and I was extremely sensitive about people's comments on her size. She started gaining pretty quickly between 3 and 4 weeks of age. At her one-month check last week she weighed 8#10. Hang in there. People say dumb things. I agree with PP who said the only things people should say are how cute the baby is and that you're doing a great job.

  • Born 7-1. Went down to 6-8. At 4 weeks he was 8-10. Every babe is different. If your lo is gaining weight it's a good thing!

Our babies sound like kindred spirits.
  • Honestly, I think people forget how small newborns are. My little guy is almost 10 pounds, and people tell us all the time how tiny he is. I just say "you should have seen him when he was born". Don't let it bother you; you're doing just fine.
  • My little girl is a tiny one. She was born 6 lbs 4 oz, dropped to 5 lbs 10 oz when she left the hospital and had slow weight gain at first. Now at 1 month she weighs 7 lbs 7 oz- shes EBF. her weight gain the past couple weeks has been really strong, gaining at least an oz a day.... I think that's what you're supposed to be looking for :) even if your baby had slow weight gain at first, now should be gaining at least at oz a day.
  • Dd 1 was born 5.10 she didnt hit 7 lbs till 2 months. She would gain roughly 1 lb a month.shes 15 months and 16 lbs.docs not worried as long as weight gain is steady each month.she wasnt a preemie just small.shes a happy toddler

Some babies are just born smaller regardless of what or how you ate during pregnancy, just like some are born very large. They might take a little while to catch up but they will eventually! Don't worry! :)

This! And I measured big my whole pregnancy and he was a week early and only 7-1. Even a little weight gain is better than nothing because they are getting enough calories to burn and store.
  • DS was 7#4 oz at birth and dropped to 6#15oz. At 3 weeks he was 9#8oz at the doctor. At 4 weeks at home he was just under 11#

DS1 also gained quickly and stayed off the charts. Both EBF

  • Jules is EP kid. Born at 10.14 dropped to 9.5 back to birthweight at 10 days old. Yesterday he weight 12.2. I only get look how big comments which is equally annoying because then people want to know how he exited my body. My vagina says none of your damn business and also ouch.
  • DS gained just over a pound in his first month. We had feeding issues for the first 3 weeks, so all that gain happened in week 4.

DD gained 13 oz in her first 2 weeks (after losing 11 in the hospital), so I'm thinking she'll have gained about 1.5 lbs by her 1-mo check.

  • Brooke was born at 6lbs 14oz and a week after her birth she weighed 6lbs 4oz. At her one month check up she weighed 7lbs 11oz- he said she is still below what she could be but she's healthy and is filling out. He said she might just be petite and that's ok. He could tell she's eating and she's not dehydrated or anything so he's not concerned.

  • DS was born at 7lbs 1 oz, dropped to 6lbs 8 oz, Friday at 3 weeks 5 days he was 9lbs 6 oz. Everyone who looks at him says how small he is but he is gaining weight faster than the recommended .5 to 1 oz a day. I agree people just forget how small newborns are.

  • I think we should treat those comments like we did the "you look like your ready to pop comments".

DD was 6 lbs 14 oz when she was born and today she weighed in at 8 lbs 8 oz.

  • My little guy was 5lb6oz when he was born, down to 4lb14oz at discharge and is now up to 7lb5oz at 5 wks. I get the "he's sooo tiny!" Comments all. The. Time. So annoying. I know he was small but he's gaining weight really well and I'm one proud momma!
  • DS1 was in the bottom 25% of weight and we got the oh he's so small comments all the time. Now this child, who is almost 2.5 years old, is close to 40 pounds and 38+ inches. No one asks of he is too small. Most people are surprised when we tell them is only 2.5 not 3 or 4 (he obviously doesn't communicate like a 4 yo but his size is deceiving).

As for this one, he was born almost 2 weeks past his due date and yet was only 7lbs 10 ozs (just like his older brother). At his 3 day appointment, he was only down by an ounce and by his 10 day appointment he was up a pound from his birth weight. I'm not sure how much he weighs now.

Comparing him to his 6 month old cousins make them look huge by comparison but they are average.

Don't worry what other people say about your kid. Keep doing what you will and in the end, it really doesn't matter their size this early in the game.

  • EBF weighed 9-3 at birth one month appt 13-3. People still say he's so tiny when we are at the store.

My little guy was born at 8 6, dropped to 7 10, and was at 8 8 at his one week.  At his one month he was 10 10.

That afternoon I went to my work.  One woman goes "Oh my god hes so tiny", as I walked down the hallway, another went "Omg hes so big for a month old".

    Eff em all.
