oil cleansing

Has anyone ever tried oil cleansing for their face? My pregnancy has given me a wonderful combo of acne and dry skin. I love coconut oil and all of its various uses and am curious about oil cleansing and which oils are actually safe during pregnancy.

Re: oil cleansing

  • Coconut oil is fine. I have dry skin and lots of red spots and I use coconut oil sometimes. I've heard if you haven't used it before, it can get worse before it gets better. Honey is good for redness, so maybe try the two mixed together?

I've been using coconut oil too for make-up removal and skin cleansing. I rub it on my face, allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes and then wet a washcloth with hot water and hold it on my face for a few moments - almost like steaming my face. I do this a couple of times before, using the washcloth to wipe away excess oil with lukewarm water. This has worked the best for me and I have very finnicky skin. It's too dry to use combo skin, zit zapping stuff, but if I use the old lady formulas, I get acne. It's annoying.

I still wash my face with soap about twice a week (Simple Cleanser) to keep any excess oil in check, but for everything else I use the coconut oil! :)

I've heard it's great for your hair too - has anyone done this? I don't want to just start dumping oil on my hair, but I'm wondering how to go about a weekly treatment or something?

  • Same as pp. Castor oil and almond oil. I play around with the proportions a bit, depending on the season. I'm more oily in the summer, so I add a little extra castor oil. And in the winter I'm so dry that I hardly use any castor oil. I've always had issues with my skin and oil cleansing is the only thing that has ever made a noticeable difference. I love it! Give it some time. Your skin may go through an adjustment period if you've only ever used soap based cleansers.
  • I tried coconut oil, because it is great as a moisturizer on the rest of my body but it dried my face out horribly! And I researched that coconut oil really can clog your pores.

So far, I've been loving almond oil and Jojoba oil straight.
  • Coconut oil works everywhere except my face.:(

I mix equal parts almond oil and aloe gel (a really high quality one, not the green stuff from the grocery) and it really works for my face.  I guess that's not totally oil cleansing but there is oil in the mixture. I love it.

  • I use a combo of castor and jojoba or almond oils. The castor oil is great for cleansing the pores, but the jojoba or almond oil leaves my skin so soft.
