Anyone dealing with low iron?

Q had his 1 year check up today.  Melon?  Large.  Height?  Not as short as we feared (35th %).  Weight? SKINNY (18 pounds - 6th % and he actually lost half a pound from being sick).  Overall healthy and on his curve but we did get an epi pen prescription and a referral to an allergist for a suspected nut allergy.  The only mildly concerning thing is that his iron was a hair below "low normal."  We're going to start giving the drops but I'd love to boost his iron intake with food as well but the iron rich foods aren't things that are easy to get into him - meats and dark leafy greens.  Has anyone found any good tricks...smoothie recipes or other inventive ways of sneaking iron rich foods in?

  • elmo, Tyler loves steak. I know that's not saying much, because Tyler loves everything, but even if Q just sucks on it I've heard that it's good. How does he feel about beans? Ty likes to pick them up individually...hmm...o and I put spinach in everything, sauté it and put it in turkey burgers or meatballs.

It's funny because yeah, they're keeping me on my toes but I still feel like they're pretty easy.  Maybe I have a high tolerance for shit? :-p  He's not a fan of meat.  In fact, he's taking this second kid thing seriously and starting all the challenging behaviors (like picky eating) nice and early.  He'll pick up one piece of whatever he doesn't like, look you dead in the eyes and then *plop* on the floor it goes.  He'd live on blueberries and pasta salad if I let him.  Maybe I'll try making some sort of sauce with spinach and he probably would like beans because he likes the berry size for picking up :)

  • Do you have cast iron cookware?  Things like tomato sauces that you could put on pasta will absorb iron from the pan, and add some iron into foods that otherwise wouldn't have as much.

Beyond that, I'm afraid I'm no help.  LO loves steak, broccoli, and lentils (not a fan of dark leafy greens though) - so I just let him go to town on those and hope it's enough!

  • @CL8badB CHEERIOS!  He'll eat the shit out of those - I had no idea they had so much iron!  We'll definitely be doing those as our go to snack.  We just reintroduced eggs after a suspected allergy and he seems ok with them so I'll try doing spinach in those as well.  I bought some lentils recently but honestly have never had them or eaten them so I'll have to figure out a good way to serve them.  Maybe Aiden will eat them too. (lol probably not)

  • Ditto @cl8badb. when I was told I had low iron levels I started snacking on cheerios everyday. I think most breakfast cereals are fortified with a ton of vitamins.

  • I was told the poly vi sol iron supplement too- just make sure you add it to water or juice though, not milk. Pedi said that the vitamin d and calcium in the milk blocks absorption.

I never knew cheerios had so much iron, thanks for the tip PP!

    Other items high in iron:
    any type of meat
    cream of wheat
    tofu (think soy milk)
Pretty much any type of green veggie- broccoli, peas, kale, string beans, etc.

  • Lily was a smidge low as well. The pedi didn't seem so worried this time. She just said to make sure she is getting meat. Apparently, all near has iron, just beef has a higher content. H is insisting on continuing the toddler formula because it has iron in it.

  • Black beans are a good source of iron and DD loves them.

  • Earths best baby oatmeal has a lot of iron in it. Maybe try giving that to him a few times a day. The oatmeal should keep him regular. Ds1 had low iron around 1 1/2 yrs so we ended up giving him 1/2 flinstone vitamin with iron. It didn't cause constipation but it did leave iron deposits on his teeth.

  • @kdc2007 it's funny you mention that.  I'd tried it with him a couple times and he didn't like it but would eat it blended with bananas (not helpful lol).  I got one last night and coated it in Cheerios and he gobbled it!
