Eff you reflux!

DS was dxed with reflux in Friday after 2 miserable weeks of feeding and having to EP because he would pull off the boob and arch his back and scream. He was prescribed .5 ml Zantac 2x a day. I'm not sure why but his medicine is mint flavored it smells really strong and according to DH it is nasty. We are having trouble getting a complete dose into him because he fights and fights. He seems a lot better but not 100% how can I get all the meds into him?

Re: Eff you reflux!

  • What works for us is to give him his dose little bits at a time, squirting it into his cheek so that it's not like a water gun at the back of his throat. We will also encourage a few secs of pacifier after each bit, to facilitate swallowing.

  • Next time ask if they can do unflavored or a different flavor.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • I don't know if you pump at all yet, but we would mix it with a little of DD's formula and she would drink it with no problem. I hope he feels better soon! We have been dealing with this for about 5 weeks (DD2 is 7 weeks old now) and she has to go see a GI doctor tomorrow because its so severe. Good luck!

  • Same here. LO hates it but I wait until she's hungry and let her suck on the syringe then shoot it in. She swallows it before she knows what it is. Then I immediately shove her on the boob to wash it down.
  • Ugh I'm wondering if unflavored it's just as nasty or what. He takes .3 ml of berry gas drops without any fuss. Did you ladies get flavored or unflavored?
  • DS2 hates it too. He's been on it for a week and a half now and it is getting better. I try to give it to him and then nurse him immediately and it helps. I also squirt it into the inside of his cheek.

  • You can mix it with a small amount of breastmilk and give it in a bottle. Just make sure he drinks it all so he gets the full dose. This is what we do with our little guy, if we gave it to him straight he just spit it back out. I did double check with the pharmacist and they said this was perfectly fine to do. I don't know why they make a medicine for babies that smells/tastes like mouthwash! Otherwise if that still doesn't work, you can see if your pharmacy has a different flavor.
  • Unfortunately mint is the flavor. Which doesn't make since seeing the primary users are infants. The pharmacy can use flavor rx to make it grape (the only reccomendated flavor) but there is also a disclaimer that the flAvoring company hAs saying it doesn't help much :(. I agree with pp to squirt in the cheek a bit at a time. I'm sorry your little one has reflux :/.
  • We are using Zantac too and they flavored it with grape flavor (disclaimer: it still tastes like hell!) LO a getting used to it though and isn't fighting it as much. In the beginning a friend suggested blowing into his mouth when you give it to LO it makes them swallow (reflex apparently). This helped and he only fussed a little. It sounds mean and I was hesitant at first but a screaming baby do to reflux is mean if you ask me!
  • I've been getting about 90% in him by squirting it in the cheek with his head tilted back a little (supported of course) and following with the pacifier to get him to swallow/not spit it out.

I attempted to try it mixed with a little milk in a bottle but when it was meds time he was not remotely hungry for the first time in his life. I'll try it again tonight.

Thank you gals for all the suggestions sorry we're all in the same boat.

@ljbreck‌ did he puke up a lot too or just arch his back while nursing? My baby has been pulling a lot on my nipple the past couple days and also does a lot of back arching. Trying to figure out what that means though between gas, reflux, OALD, etc...

Mobile sorry if the quotes suck! He projectile vommited and was spitting up so forcefully it came out of his nose. Feeding time also included screaming, arching, pulling off and hysterics. All of the above could be so many things that my pedi said it was just a game of ruling things out.

We had been using gas drops and gripe water so my pedi ruled out just a gas issue and we are watching the stool for a MSPI issue bu no blood and the meds have helped a ton. I'd say start by using gas drops after feedings (If you haven't been) because they are safe to use each time and really work great for gas. If you don't see pretty immediate improvement call you pedi for their opinion.
