First Appointment - No tests, just ultrasound....weird or normal?

Hi Ladies,

I just had my first appointment yesterday and we saw the heartbeat at 175BPM and the baby is growing on schedule. However, my doctor did not check my levels of hormones or anything. So many people on this board are talking about HCG levels and I am wondering why mine weren't tested. Thoughts? In any event we are coming back in 3 weeks for genetic screening and another ultrasound.

Re: First Appointment - No tests, just ultrasound....weird or normal?

  • I did not have any blood work at mine. This office won't do it until my 2nd trimester. I did however get an ultrasound. I didn't get how fast the heartbeat was but I could see it on the screen. I think all clinics are different. My last clinic did all the blood work this first visit. And I actually perfer waiting. As for the hcg levels that could be those that have had Infertility issues or those that have had multiple MC.

  • Probably normal. I always have at least 2 betas run before my 1st appointment but that's because I had an ectopic. I had my second US last week at 6w4d. All looked good. I think I have a bunch of blood work at my 10 week appt though and I'm not sure what else they will do this time.

I think after a certain point ultrasounds are more helpful than the hcg numbers, as they quit doubling after a certain point.

  • So glad the appointment went well! I agree, have no betas run isn't cause for concern. I've never had them done on any of my pregnancies. At the first appointment the only additional thing I get is lab orders for a blood draw to do the regular 1st tri tests.

I did get a full exam, u/s, and blood work. This was a new obgyn so I think they just wanted records to see if I had any infections and to determine the blood type. They also did a urine test and said they will need me to pee i a cup at each visit.

  • Going to agree with everyone. They only keep checking levels if you have had a history of MC,have done fertility treatments or are high risk. I go in for my second round of blood work. But I have a history of MC. I haven't even found a regular OB YET! I'm just doing all of this with my fertility dr. I guess I better get on that ! LOL glad everything liked good at your appointment!
  • I'm sure that I peed in a cup my first appointment last time, but no blood work...

  • Same here both times. If you are at least 8w along and don't have history of loss they would have no reason to check your hormones i think.

I think I only had betas drawn because of my previous mc and because I started out in an RE's office, so I think that's their standard procedure.

I had those draws about a week before the first u/s.

    Congrats on that beautiful heartbeat!
