My 13 month old will not go to sleep in his crib if i put him in there awake

Help!  My 13 month old will not go to sleep if i just put him in his crib awake.  I have to give him a bottle and then once he falls asleep while drinking his bottle i can then put him in his crib for the night.  How can i get him off the bottles before naps and bedtime and also how can i get him to go to sleep on his own?

  • Patience and repetition are your best friends with this one.  It took about 2 weeks for DD to get used to being put in her crib semi-awake and not cry herself to sleep.  Every now and then we do have some tears, mainly when there's been an interruption in her bedtime routine (family visiting, a cold, etc) but then we get right back on track.

I also have soft toys in her crib and they are only for the crib.  I made a routine of asking her when she's looking sleepy "are you ready to go to bed with turtle and baby?" and with enough repetition and routine she will now reach for her crib most nights.  I also made a routine of the way I say goodnight and leave her room.  We did have to start with CIO but now there are rarely tears to contend with.

  • Do you have something to help him sleep? Ours used to be that way, but then he got used to going to bed with his teddy bears, blanket, and having his fisher price rainforest mobile play music to help him fall asleep. Sometimes it would take him the whole 20 minutes of being in there listening to the music before he would fall asleep. Now we just lay him in there awake and he's usually out in the first 5 minutes. I would try some music to maybe help him fall asleep.

  • I highly recommend "The baby whisperer" methods for sleep training. There is crying involved, but it is not cry it out - you never have to leave the kid alone to cry for extended periods of time. There's an online forum you can peruse, and there are also a couple of books. Worked really well for me when I was breaking a nursing association, and my cousin recently gave it a try. She just told me that her LO slept for 9 hrs straight - this is after not sleeping for more than 4 hours, ever, before trying Tracy Hoag's methods.
