Two car seats in the car... Arrangements

Okay STMs! how does this work? Is it easier to have the newborn behind the passenger side seat, or behind the drivers side seat? Part of me thinks I won't have room for the rear facing convertible behind my drivers seat without moving it forward (which I refuse to do for a drivers seat) so, the infant seat would fit back there better. Plus it will be easier to insert a fallen soother if need be if the newbie is right behind me. Or is it better to find a way to make it fit so the new baby is behind the passenger seat? I fear not being able to reach if I need to quickly sooth the baby.... Plus I drive a Jeep Liberty, which is a very short body.

How does this work?

  • I have ds behind me and dd on passenger side. I could reach her better that way. I get out, unbuckle ds and tell him to get his shoes on or whatever he needs to be getting while Iwalk around and get dd out.

  • My FI has a jeep grand cherokee, and our convertible seat only fits rear facing on the passenger side. We could maybe swing it behind the driver if I was the one driving, but FI is 6 ft. tall. I'm going to be getting a mini countryman, so the infant seat will definitely need to go behind me.

  • Like Vero, I'll put the newbie behind me in the drivers side and switch E to the other side. But I have a minivan with captain chairs in the middle not a bench. My thinking was that I'll be carrying the baby while E can walk. C can help him climb in the van while I buckle baby girl. And E will only be tear facing for another year — he's so big and tall, we'll be lucky if I can keep him that long. But I've told DH that babies will stay backwards as long as I possibly can keep them.

    Sorry not that helpful!

  • I guess the way we will do it will end up being temporary. Because we are keeping DS rear facing until at least 2, it makes sense for him to move behind me when we flip his seat around. Then I won't have to worry about that seat when the next LO moves into a convertible style rear facing seat.

The next conundrum will be deciding to steal DHs convertible out of his car, or buy two new car seats... one for each vehicle.

How often does your DH drive the kids? How much hassle will it be to trade cars when he does, or move the seats? This was what helped us decode that we didn't need to seats. DH never goes anywhere with the kids without me, and if he did, he just take the van.

  • @tamarar4 he actually takes DS quite a bit. He will take him to daycare on days he is off and pick him up from day care as well (but not always all on the same day... that fluctuates). So that does make a big difference. Plus, this sounds horrible, but because his vehicle is newer than mine (by about 8 years and he loves his new car), me taking his car always results in him telling me I can't. Even though I take it any ways... Honey, I wasn't asking you if I could take your car, I am giving you the courtesy of knowing that I am taking it...

I just know with our lifestyle that it would be hindering for both of us to have to constantly switch cars. Mind you, for the year I am on mat leave, we could probably make this work...

  • Well, them you can frame the question to him as, would you rather spend $$$ on multiple cast seats, or trade cars back and forth when you need to take the kids.

Or, if you would rather drive his car, don't give him the choice! Lol ;)

  • I loooooove driving his car. So nice and smooth. We have two infant seats, which one was loaned to us, so I should check the expiry date. We are good to go for the first several months. I am sure we will buy one seat to begin with, as DH will tell me he doesn't mind moving the seats, followed by him insisting us buying the second...
