Am I crazy...? (diagnosis update in comments)

(Wait, don't answer that.)

No, but seriously. I think Brennon has an ear infection. He has been really irritable the past 2 nights and won't sleep in his crib. I've actually let him sleep in the rock n play next to my bed. (Sooooo unlike me, but my husband is out of town until tomorrow night and it's just easier that way for me.)

Brennon is a really happy dude. He barely cried for any of his shots, or the 4 rounds of bloodwork he had to have done when they were ruling out the metabolic disorder. But he has been irritable and fussy the past few days, and was inconsolable for about an hour last night until I finally broke down and gave him Tylenol. I figured he was either teething or had an ear infection. Today, he has been unhappy when nursing on the left -- when his right ear is down. And his napping has been shorter with more tossing and turning than normal. There have been a few ear tugs, but nothing crazy. I think I just have this super easy going baby who doesn't get really upset, so I'm afraid that I'm going to miss something. Then I saw the difference between his ears (see below, good ear first.)

I should be concerned, right? I'm going to call the pediatrician tomorrow. Better safe than sorry, I figure. It's just hard because he's so easy going -- how do I say to them, well, he cried on Monday night and that was weird? Lol.

  • I would call the pediatrician in the morning just to make sure he doesnt have an infection. You aren't crazy. Poor baby. I hope he feels better.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to call. I just feel kind of silly saying that one of my concerns is that he is crying, haha. But it is what it is. He's just a very happy dude.

Not crazy. I have a super happy baby too, so if she's irritable, something's off. Ask the ped for an ear check, and net the irritability as just one of the signs.

  • Don't feel silly. If his normal temperament is always happy and now he's suddenly very fussy, that's a symptom of something. My DD1 has never had an ear infection before (so no experience), however, her teething symptoms always came off like she had one. Hopefully he doesn't but it couldn't hurt to call. No fever, right?

Btw, DD2 has been pretty miserable the last couple days too. The only thing that's helping is nursing or rubbing her gums. Teething sucks.

  • I'd bet that it is an ear infection due to teething....good idea calling the pedi. Feel better, Brennon.

  • No your not crazy, I would definitely call the pedi also, just to get the little guy checked out. Poor thing, hope he gets better.
  • Your not crazy....! Hope your little one feels better. !
  • I really can't see them scoffing at you for saying he was crying or not sleeping well. What's important is what is different, not how similar he is to other babies. Especially if you have been seeing the same pedi, he/she will know that is irregular based on how he normally acts.

Adelyn was super colic so when she didn't poop for 3 days then screamed bloody murder on the fourth day, her pedi said she wasn't surprised since she can't handle normal gas let alone a backup. Even though she knew not pooping was normal at her age, she knew she wouldn't react normally. So never worry about how you think it might sound, they'll get it. ;)
  • I definitely see a difference in the picture. Not crazy at all. I hope he feels better fast! Moms know their babies best : )

There are other babies that are happy and don't cry much so you telling the nurse/dr that, isn't weird. I'm sure they've heard it before.

  • @peanutmuse‌ my dh is out of town too! And I sent him a message today wondering if she might have an ear infection! Her only symptoms are poorly sleeping (was up every 10-15 minutes last night, barely napping) and crying (real cries) when she woke up from sleeping! But now on the second night, I think I might of eaten something (she's MSPI) and I did eat something Sunday that I didn't prepare myself- But keep us posted! My ds has only had one- and it was dx at a well visit when they checked his ears. Hope B settles back down and feels better!

I echo everyone else, you are not crazy at all to call. DS has a double ear infection. He is very irritable and sleeping very poorly.

  • I'd say based on your pictures alone that something is up. DD was randomly tugging on her ears the past few days but no other signs of fussiness or difficulties with laying down. She's not a fussy baby and rarely cries, so I figured she must be fine. Anyways, the ear tugging stopped, but I'm still keeping an eye out.

    hope everything is alright!
  • Hope Brennon feels better very soon!! Poor little man! I would tell the pedi that you see the redness in his ear, that he is irritable, and not sleeping well. Even if the doc (for some strange reason) didn't think those were symptoms of an ear infection over the phone, your concerns should be enough for the doc to see him. Then he will see the ear infection and can medicate and get your little man better soon!

Definitely not crazy! It is hard not to worry when they do something so out of the ordinary like that. I hope he feels better soon!

  • I put a call in and I'm waiting for the triage nurse to get back to me. I called a little bit later than I intended because we were both sleeping pretty late this morning after another not so great night. (I'm giggling at 8:15am being "late" hahaha.)  It's not too bad considering what others go through, just different for us. Especially being on my own this week. I guess we'll see! His ear is still a bit red, but now he seems happy. Weird baby.
  • Nope. Mother's intuition! Hope he's alright.

  • Not crazy at all.  L was just diagnosed with an ear infection on Monday.  She did have a fever on sunday but it was gone by Monday and she was also cutting a tooth on Sunday.  her only other symptom was she was not as happy as usual and was not giggling like normal.  Hope B feels better soon!

  • No ear infection. No teeth. Diagnosis: a reaction to shellfish I ate on Monday and for leftovers on Tuesday. I worked with a nurse who is also a lactation specialist. The red ear was just a fluke and coincidence. I can't eat shellfish until he's a year old and then I can try it again. Dammit.

Dude. Happy for no ear infection, but no shellfish?! Sad times.
Seriously.  I'm having a little funeral for the rest of my shrimp risotto. :(

NU UH!!!did you come to this conclusion simply because of the food timing? I ask this because I wondered if Maggie had a reaction to me eatting a bunch of shrimp last month, but I kinda blew it off.
@wilburbud, He was definitely way off in the evening time, his morning poop was super mucousy (sorry for the TMI) but by afternoon he was seemingly back to normal. The only constant between the two nights and the pm irritability, vomiting, non-sleeping was the fact that I ate shrimp risotto for dinner both nights. Nothing else in our routine or my diet was different. It was kind of process of elimination, in the absence of anything else physically wrong with him. The nurse trusted my judgment on the severity of his vomiting, since he has a pretty extreme case of reflux -- he spits up every time he's there and I'm not phased by it at all, so they know that it must be bad if I don't even react to what they see, KWIM?
  • I never would have thought of a food reaction at this age. I guess just because they are getting to ages where teething is happening and there are so many symptoms. Thanks for the update. Boooourns to no seafood though!
  • That is nuts! I'm happy it's nothing more than a reaction but I'm sorry you can't have anymore shellfish Peanut :(
