Please help...Having issues with prefolds

I have GMD prefolds and thirsties covers. I have been doing an angel wing fold and securing with a snappie. The diapers just don't feel very soft. I prepped them like the directions said but they feel rough and stiff still and leave DDs bum looking red and sore. I dry them on a drying rack either in the sun or inside if it's not nice outside. I am using tide original which is what I use on our pockets so I don't know if that is the issue. It seems like the diaper gets all twisted and crumpled by the time I change her as well, but I try to change her at least every two hours if not sooner. Any ideas? Should I try drying them in the dryer?

What about some sort of softener? Like vinegar? You could dedicatedly try a dryer cycle, but I usually find the bunching and wrinkled edges are worse after a dryer cycle.

If LO is bother by the roughness, what about a thin, soft, doubler? I did this with DD1. I folded an old wash cloth in half (or third depending on the size), then covered it with flannel.

I dry mine the same way you do, but then run them thru a "fluff" cycle on the dryer to de-crunch-ify them. Can't remember if that is the correct name, but little or no heat to soften them up a bit. Makes it easier for me to fold the prefolds. Hope that helps!

@DC2London‌ I believe I prepped them properly, it said to wash them 4-5 times and dry them completely between. Does that sound right? I checked to make sure they absorbed and I think they did.
