Moving bedtime back

I EP and my girl drinks 3-4 oz every 3-4 hours. She has been sleeping from 10:30 pm (her current bedtime) to around 4 or 5, then goes right back to sleep after bottle and sleeps til 8-9:30.

She gets really fussy at night around 8 and I'm wondering if I should make that her bedtime. Right now I give her a bottle and fresh diaper around 10:30 and she goes right to sleep.

If I move her bedtime back to 8ish, she will miss that 10:30 feeding. Is that ok? How do you compensate? Does this mean she wakes up at 2:30 or 3 now, or will she still sleep til 4-5? Obv need to try to see what works...just wondering mainly about feeding her less.

  • I don't think feeding less will be a problem. If she is hungry she will wake up and you'll know. And you'll also get on a new schedule. My LO gets super fussy around 8:30. That's when he gets his bath, then a bottle, and he is usually sleeping by 9:30. Most of the time he sleeps through the night until 7:30. But if he is hungry he will wake up (rarely happens).
His weight gain and diapers are all normal.

This. We finally figured out M gets fussy around 8-8:30 and instead of keeping her up to eat more we started changing/lotion/swaddle/nurse/bed around 7-8 weeks old and she's been a rock star ever since. Sometimes she'll wake for a feeding but usually sleeps through the night til 8:30-9 am (now granted this child won't nap worth crap during the day so she must be one of those babies who gets most of their sleep at once). Last night we started trying to get her down about an hour earlier so she can wake an hour earlier to get her ready for starting daycare/me going back to work in 2 weeks. Worked well last night so we shall see ...

But give it a try and see how it goes. M is 10 weeks and a couple of days and since 8 weeks has fluctuated btwn 6-7 feedings a day - I feed on demand.

  • Why not try it? I noticed James started getting fussy around 7/7:30 so when he starts to complain I put him in the bath, do lotion, fresh diaper, jammies, and a bottle. The last few nights he's been sleeping until 5/6AM.

The worst thing that could happen is your LO wakes up and has to be fed. You may get lucky and she'll just STTN. I wouldn't worry about a missed feeding. Feedings become naturally less frequent as they age.

  • Our LO is 12 weeks and we moved bedtime to around 8 because she was getting super fussy. She sometimes gets up around 4:30 or later to eat, then sleeps until about 8:30. She is a champ sleeper at night, but naps are another story lol. The hardest part for us is going to sleep before 10 to get a good sleep ourselves.

  • We were able to move it back to 10 and she slept til 6:30 ;) I'll try 9:30 tonight.

  • @NorthernLghts‌ I give pumped bottles of BM and give 2 bottles of formula a day (one right before bed and one right when LO wakes up for the day).
At his 2 month appt after telling my pedi he was waking up in the night twice and eating about every 2 hrs during the day, she told me to try spacing out his feedings during the day to around 3 or 3 1/2 hours and he would sleep longer at night.
So I tried to keep him occupied during the day by playing, singing, etc.
once his feedings were a little more spaced out he started STTN. He now is asleep by 9:30 and stays down until 7:30. There are some fluke nights when he wakes up at around 3:30 but those are few and far between.
He gets 6 oz formula before bed and when he wakes up. And throughout the day he gets 5 oz of formula.
He was 8lb1oz when he was born. At 2 months he was 14lb1oz, and now at 3 months 1 weeks he's 16lbs.
  • If your LO is fussy at around 8:00, she could be tired instead of hungry.  Just feed LO when she wakes up and his hungry.  I wouldn't worry about a feeding schedule.

My LO goes to bed at 6:30 or 7.  Her eyes get heavy and she starts to fuss.  I feed her right before she goes to bed.  She usually wakes up at about 4:00 to eat.  And then goes back to bed until around 6:30 when we start the day.  Good luck!
  • @NorthernLghts‌ - maybe you'll feel a little better hearing this. Sloan at 13 weeks just hit 10pounds. We are in the 3rd percentile. Doctor hasn't said anything about bedtime sleep and feeds. I can't get her to eat more during the day so that's out. She eats once or twice during the night. I get 4-5 hour stretches.

Her bedtime routine we were starting between 7-8 just when she would start to fuss. She has been fussy a lot starting at 6 recently. Tonight we got her down after the routine by 715- I wonder how the night is going to go
  • @NorthernLghts‌ yeah my plan didn't work- she's wide awake after 15 min of sleep. I think something is going in for her to be this fussy. Growing/teething/ idk I'm reaching for anything that this is temporary.

We don't get good naps during the day- I've been working on it though and it's getting better
  • Lily is 13 weeks now. She takes 6&half oz every 3-31/2 hrs.
She gets super fussy around 6pm so we bath, lotion, pj's & bottle.
She has last bottle of day in her room in the dim light (just night light on) already zipped into her sleeping bag.
Once done she's sleepy enough....goes into cot & now sleeps from 645-7pm ish until 6-630am! It's great! Finally have a eve bk & a full night sleep!
She just stopped the 3-4am ish feed by herself. We just let her lead, we just stuck religiously to the bedtime routine & it's payed off!
  • You could still try putting her down earlier and then doing a dream feed before you go to bed so that she's still full and then she might not wake, since she's already used to doing that longer stretch.
