If your LO is sitting...

What did you do to encourage this? I feel like I'm constantly trying to put her in a "sit, " to give her practice. Can't think of anything else to do! And she is getting better - I'm not stressing that she doesn't sit yet, I just want to make sure I'm doing what I can to help her develop the skill.

  • I honestly just sat him up to play, and made sure to put toys close to him so he didn't have to reach for them. I would sit behind him just incase he fell over.

  • We go to PT and one of our exercises is when he reaches for his feet, we're supposed to guide them to his mouth. All that foot grabbing is like little baby crunches. He doesn't sit yet. Today the therapist said to prop him up in a sitting position to strengthen his core too. When I could tell DS1 was close, I'd sit him on a blanket on soft grass or a pile of laundry. He could balance a little longer on a soft surface and finally did sit for the first time on a blanket in the grass.

  • I just sat her up a few times a day until she got the hang of it.
  • Every kid is different, so try to not stress if your LO isn't interested in sitting right now. DS1 sat pretty late, but he was army crawling at this age. Finn is the opposite--he sits well, but has no interest in crawling.

Finn is in PT. We focus a lot on building his core. I'll sit him up between my legs, then put toys to the side, so he has to bend down to get him and use his strength to straighten up. I also have him laying on his back, then pull on his arms slowly to do a sit up, so he has to use his belly muscles to help sit up. Another thing we do is sit him on a couch cushion on the floor. I then hold his waste and he has to use his stomach to help balance himself. I think those things have all helped his belly muscles.

  • The Bumbo is great because the babies are in the sit position to strengthen their core yet are still assisted. You're doing everything right and have received some great advice! My baby has been sitting for 2 months, but has never rolled over. I think your little one is just fine:)

I used a boppy pillow and put her in the pillow at first (while I was close by), then we moved to the floor sitting between my legs, then we transitioned into the bumbo. It took about A month for her to go from the gorilla-sit (hands on the ground) to sitting up on her own. LO started sitting on her own about 6months 1 week, and now is starting to pull herself up! Good luck!

Mine just started sitting although she tips over easily and frequently! She has been sitting supported for the past month + as it is her preferred position on our laps etc. I just started trying her out unassisted with the boppy around her hips and it's helped to center her a bit. I think it just all happens naturally for babies when they're ready but what do I know - I'm a FTM as well!

  • I sit behind him a lot with my legs in a V. He sits between them and my legs act like bumpers... like bumper bowling :).

  • We use the boppy to put behind her to break her fall. She started wanting to sit up around 5.5 months (she's 6.5 months) during diaper changes. She always tried to do a crunch to sit up so that was my cue to start trying with her
  • I think you're doing the right thing.  Just put her in that position and put toys in front of her. I use the boppy to put around my LO so she doesn't fall to the sides.  Otherwise, she'll get there on her own time.

Totally this. Using the boppy has been perfect. It has been a slow progression with her, getting better little by little. Today she sat on her own for several minutes! I'm still always right there though, I don't trust her not to face plant just yet. ;)
  • Sorry to thread jack, but at what point should they be pulling themselves up to sitting? DS does some major crunches but isn't close to be able to pull himself to the sitting position.
I think that's still a ways away. I think DS1 may have backed into sitting from being on his belly/up on all fours before he actually pulled himself up, but I don't remember exactly.
