Heartburn medicine question

Obviously, I will be talking to my OB about this but I wanted to know what you guys had heard...my heartburn was initially helped by Pepcid. This stopped working and my OB told me to try Prilosec. Prilosec is a Class C med so I tried to do without it but, alas, the heartburn was too much. My GP recommended Zantac, a class B med. I took it for two days but I emailed my ob office to ask if it was ok and the nurse responded that "pepcid was a better choice."

My question is why? Both are class B and widely, it seems, recommended to pregnant ladies.

Re: Heartburn medicine question

  • My OB said Zantac was fine to take.  I get heartburn almost every day, but I've been trying to ignore it or control it with Maalox and Tums, Zantac is my last resort.  It's not as good as the prescription I was on before, but it'll have to do for now.

  • You can get some great specific information from the Infant Risk Center at TTU. They take calls regarding taking medications while pregnant or breastfeeding during normal business hours: (806) 352-2519

  • I have been on Prevacid for years.  My OB didn't blink an eye at it and said to stay on it (as it is only going to get worse).  None of the others work well for me.

I think most OBs have a list of their "favorite" drugs and turn to those first.

  • I have fun acid reflux also. She said Zantac and Prilosec were both ok to take and if it persisted I need to go back on the Nexium. In my experience Prilosec won't help you unless you take it like clock work. Same time every day and it takes 2-3 days to kick in.

  • Thanks, ladies.  The nurse got back to me and said the doctor on site today said that Zantac was fine, since Pepcid was no longer working.  It seems to be working for me so far.  Fingers crossed it keeps working!  Heartburn/ acid reflux is no fun.

  • Tums do nothing for me whatsoever at this point.  I might as well be eating chalk.  Everything gives me that horrible burning feeling--even things that normally wouldn't.  The only non medication thing that seems to give me any relief is chewing gum, as weird as that is...

Ha!  Tums did little to help the HB with DD, but I kept taking it anyway because I figured the extra calcium wouldn't hurt!

I second the recommendation of the infant  risk center. I called them a few times while breastfeeding and thought they were awesome.

  • I use tums or Pepcid complete chewables. Every obgyn seems to be on a different page about what's ok and what's not. Kaiser is kind of a "cya" agency, and just says no to everything. Last obgyn said I can take up to 4 Pepcid complete chewables daily. I only use them when tums aren't cutting it.

My OB said the same - also that Pepsid was okay too. but I like Lauren1184 try to control with Tums or Maalox and only go to the others if it just gets so bad - I often take the maximum Tums they say to take in 24 hours but manage. I never had acid reflux before baby, so this is new to me. I figure. a few more months and I'll be done, so I just chew my tums and try to not eat super acid-inducing food and eat smaller meals. Also - I'm not much of a milk drinker, which I hear helps with acid - so each evening, I do a glass of chocolate milk - satisfy my sweet tooth and it does help quell the acid quite a bit.
