You're not being stuffy. It's a little odd. But to each their own. Maybe your niece is scared of the surgery and the parents are doing this to make it a fun adventure?

Does a "good bye tonsil party" involve cake? Because if so I think we all know that I'm down. How did they invite you? I'm just curious. Was it e-vite, paper, or phone?

ETA: I second everything @ssstephanie214‌ said about the gift part, that would totally take this from weird to bizarre.

For clarification: No presents. I don't know if there will be cake. I'm not going because my dad's side's family reunion is that weekend.

Since my sister isn't a huge AW or into throwing parties, my guess is it's going to be a smaller-ish affair and probably just trying to make niece feel better about her surgery. I get it in theory. I can't imagine how scared niece must be (I never had tonsils out). I still think the idea of a party is weird though.

If it is something small with just family to ease your niece's fears then I am with pp and think it is ok. However, an actual party with invites and the whole shebang would be a bit odd.

Some people like to have parties. I think it's a cute way to make a scary surgery a little more fun for a kid, who might be really frightened to go. I would happily go celebrate, as long as they didn't expect gifts. That would be tacky.

This struck me as odd when I first read it, although I can see the merit of having some family around to ease the kid's fears about surgery. Is the party before or after the surgery? Because if it's before I don't think she'll enjoy cake or food too much. It could be nice after to have a few relatives over while she gets to eat ice cream to say "Yay for you, you were so brave, we're so glad you're feeling better, etc." So is the party pre or post-surgery?
