RANT: Teacher's day from hell!!!!

I *wish* I could have a drink right now. Or like 4. Today was one for the books as far as teaching goes!!!

I'm an art teacher for an urban elementary school in Boston. Our kids have awful behaviors, especially the older ones. Yesterday, two of my 4th graders got notes home because they were fighting over a paintbrush, pulling it back and forth until it broke. Today, one of their moms came in, pulled me out of a rehearsal we are having for the Arts performance later this week, and reamed me out until I took back the note home (the notes get formally logged into the student's file). She said that her daughter should not have gotten the note because "it was her first one all year and it shouldn't have been given over some paintbrush" (which I paid for out of pocket, by the way), and that the "other kid is worse so he should get one for bein' all up in her bidness" (quoted from mom). We eventually came to some terms in which her daughter could earn the note being taken back, but still - not a good start.

Then, kindergarten art class had a bunch of overheated monkeys in it in place of my students, so that wasn't pleasant. Lots of tears, tattling - not the norm for this bunch, since the little ones are usually great for me. The heat does strange things, and it's hot and muggy as f*ck in my room today.

AND THEN, my hardest group had art today (one of my 4th grade classes - can you tell I have trouble with the 4th grade??) and of COURSE theirs is the one where a bee decides to sting ones of them, creating an uproar that took the entire class period to calm down (if you can even call it "calm").

The scene looked something like this, with my students being the "Lucys" and me being Cuba Gooding Jr. Replace his "2 million dollars....2 million dollars" mantra with "2 weeks of school left....2 weeks of school left..." and that was pretty much the entirety of my 4th grade class this afternoon:

And to top it all off, I have to hang around school until 6 to have dinner with my manager, with whom I do NOT get along, tonight for a team meeting and won't get home 'til like 9pm since I live 45 min away.

....are we sure we can't even have a *little* bit of the juice??? ;););)

Hope you all had a better day than me -_-

Re: RANT: Teacher's day from hell!!!!

  • So sorry you had such a crazy day. I'm a substitute teacher and my days can be the best or the kind where i drive home in tears and say never again. Hopefully you have a better day tomorrow- the countdown is on! Hang in there! And do something nice for yourself, whether it be wine or a milkshake- you earned it!

  • Loading the player...
  • Two more weeks!  Holy cow when did school start or was there just a ton of snow days?  Today was the last day here in WI but my cousin, OK, has been out of school for a month now.
  • I feel for you completely. I also teach art and the last two weeks are the worst! See if you can schedule a massage for hen school gets out!
  • The end of the school year is the WORST!  I'm so sorry you had such a rough day.  I hope the next 2 weeks are much less eventful & go by FAST for you! :)

  • Sorry about your day. I used to teach at a charter school (7th grade) and I do not miss it! That paintbrush thing would have pissed me off. Did you say dinner with your manager? Never heard of a school having managers! I'm interested.

  • Im a teacher too and trying to keep my stress level low during this pregnancy is near impossible. I teach high school biology and 4 of my 5 classes are great....but I have that one class from hell- the reason I dread going to work every day! The kids in tht class are horrible. On a daily basis I get sworn at, talked back to. The kids refuse to do work, refuse to stay off their cell phones (then I get yelled at by administration bc they are on their phones). Then when I call home the parents are no help at all. they dont discipline their kids at all. Its a mess. Im counting down the days till summer!
  • I am so sorry you had such a bad day. Have an Oreo milkshake :). I teach reading in an elementary school and completely understand *those* days!

@kimberly_ann81‌ where in WI are you? I am in Madison and have 2 days left!

  • Sorry you had a rough day but only 2 more weeks!!! Schools out for me- thank god I was starting to crack. The last few and very first weeks are truly the worst. No experience on the vino thing. I would rather not because at this point half a glass would just seem insulting.. I want half a bottle.
  • Holy hell that sounds like a rough day. Is this a new thing parents do? Not letting their kids learn lessons from mistakes? The entitlement of some people astounds me!

Up in Fond du Lac.  I grew up in Deforest and hated the fact that our schools would only close when Madison did and they never closed. :)
  • Thanks, guys! I feel much better now, especially since the official Arts performance was today and went EXTREMELY well!

I forgot that I had more to that mom story: she actually came back to the school later that afternoon, furious that her daughter had to miss recess because of the note home (kids with notes home are left out of recess for the day following their note). I didn't get a chance to tell her teacher that she was off the hook until AFTER her recess had already happened, so she had to sit out and I had to call the mom to explain after school. Ridiculous. Furthermore, the mom came in AGAIN today, asking me if I could "go apologize to her daughter" today for her having to miss recess the other day. People really need to get their priorities straight - this girl will not be getting an apology from me since the matter, as far as I'm concerned, was already handled days ago. The nerve of some people - their kids are ALL on pedestals. Ugh.

Yeah, we have managers that work between us and the principal. I actually hate it....the principal has never seen me class or observed or anything, only my manager, and my manager doesn't like my style of teaching so we don't get along at all. Hers is the only opinion that gets forwarded to the principal, so now all my reviews are biased since they're all based on her opinions. Sucks. I don't recommend managers at a school - much rather work with just the principal!
Holy day from hell. I'm sorry your day was so crazy. As far as the wine goes, everyone sees it differently. I have friends that will have a glass a week. Me personally? If something went wrong I would always blame it on that glass of wine. Take a bath and just keep telling yourself it's almost over.
I'm exactly the same way! I took a hot bath and wore PJs from 5pm til bed. Felt better after that :)

Yeah, we have an extra long school year since we're a charter school. We go from late August to late June, and then we also have extended school days (7:45-3:30 for the kids, longer for us). Not ideal, but at least there's a light at the end of the tunnel!
