I *wish* I could have a drink right now. Or like 4. Today was one for the books as far as teaching goes!!!
I'm an art teacher for an urban elementary school in Boston. Our kids have awful behaviors, especially the older ones. Yesterday, two of my 4th graders got notes home because they were fighting over a paintbrush, pulling it back and forth until it broke. Today, one of their moms came in, pulled me out of a rehearsal we are having for the Arts performance later this week, and reamed me out until I took back the note home (the notes get formally logged into the student's file). She said that her daughter should not have gotten the note because "it was her first one all year and it shouldn't have been given over some paintbrush" (which I paid for out of pocket, by the way), and that the "other kid is worse so he should get one for bein' all up in her bidness" (quoted from mom). We eventually came to some terms in which her daughter could earn the note being taken back, but still - not a good start.
Then, kindergarten art class had a bunch of overheated monkeys in it in place of my students, so that wasn't pleasant. Lots of tears, tattling - not the norm for this bunch, since the little ones are usually great for me. The heat does strange things, and it's hot and muggy as f*ck in my room today.
AND THEN, my hardest group had art today (one of my 4th grade classes - can you tell I have trouble with the 4th grade??) and of COURSE theirs is the one where a bee decides to sting ones of them, creating an uproar that took the entire class period to calm down (if you can even call it "calm").
The scene looked something like this, with my students being the "Lucys" and me being Cuba Gooding Jr. Replace his "2 million dollars....2 million dollars" mantra with "2 weeks of school left....2 weeks of school left..." and that was pretty much the entirety of my 4th grade class this afternoon:

....are we sure we can't even have a *little* bit of the juice???

Hope you all had a better day than me -_-

I forgot that I had more to that mom story: she actually came back to the school later that afternoon, furious that her daughter had to miss recess because of the note home (kids with notes home are left out of recess for the day following their note). I didn't get a chance to tell her teacher that she was off the hook until AFTER her recess had already happened, so she had to sit out and I had to call the mom to explain after school. Ridiculous. Furthermore, the mom came in AGAIN today, asking me if I could "go apologize to her daughter" today for her having to miss recess the other day. People really need to get their priorities straight - this girl will not be getting an apology from me since the matter, as far as I'm concerned, was already handled days ago. The nerve of some people - their kids are ALL on pedestals. Ugh.
Yeah, we have managers that work between us and the principal. I actually hate it....the principal has never seen me class or observed or anything, only my manager, and my manager doesn't like my style of teaching so we don't get along at all. Hers is the only opinion that gets forwarded to the principal, so now all my reviews are biased since they're all based on her opinions. Sucks. I don't recommend managers at a school - much rather work with just the principal!
I'm exactly the same way! I took a hot bath and wore PJs from 5pm til bed. Felt better after that
Yeah, we have an extra long school year since we're a charter school. We go from late August to late June, and then we also have extended school days (7:45-3:30 for the kids, longer for us). Not ideal, but at least there's a light at the end of the tunnel!
