Babies on the Brain

How big is too big for a stroller?

We are TTC for our second child and I am curious if we should go with a double stroller of if I should just stick with a single for the newborn. At what age do you feel your child should/will be out of a stroller? I am very interested in the city select as it has so many different seating positions but my husband seems to think we will not need it.

Thank you!

  • How old is your kid now?

DD is almost 2 and a half, and we still use the stroller for errands/ malls/ fairs/ park walking.

Wait as long as you can to buy one.  If your child is still in the stroller by the time you're far enough a long that you want to buy it. then go for it.

DD will be 3 in August and is still goes in the stroller for mall trips and for runs or walks around the neighborhood.  I'm hoping she likes the stroller for at least another year.

Edit - how old is your LO?

He will be 3 in August. So he may be 3.5 or 4. At the earliest....

Sorry, I just edited my Siggy to show. Haven't been active on here for a while..

  • NariaDreaming  I believe you are right. We just use our stroller so often now that it's hard to foresee not using it in the future. Also, we do live in Orlando and frequent the theme parks several times throughout the year. I guess we could just use an umbrella then...

  • DS is almost 3 and I use our city select quite a bit, but one of the reasons I chose it is because I can use it as a single when he doesn't feel like riding in it.

    2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
    TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
    Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • We have been using it less but our son falls asleep in the car a lot so it has been convenient to transfer him into his City Mini stroller while we are out. Just this weekend, he fell asleep just as we arrived at the mall so he took his 1.5 hour nap in the stroller.

I do however think that I have time to think it over and several options to consider. (Sling, glider and umbrella stroller) depending on the circumstances. Not sure if the glider seems practical. I will probably have him walk with us in this instance.... Only time will tell I guess.

Thank you for all of the responses!

  • I rarely used the stroller for DD until DS was born.  Two kids is a different story than one.  I have a sit and stand and it's essential for the mall or zoo or places like that.  DD is 3 now and can walk most of the time but sometimes I need her restrained so I can get stuff done.  Plus we go on walks with the dog a lot and she can't keep up then as well either but for that we take a wagon which the kids love.

Anyway, at the beginning I would say you can get away with a single and wear the baby in a carrier.  But for me sometimes you need both of them restrained, you know?
  • We're holding off on getting another stroller. I plan on baby wearing this LO more than I did with DS. That being said, I haven't ruled out the possibility of needing a double so we're playing it by ear. If we decide it's something we need then we'll go get one. It's hard to know what will work best for you until you're in the situation.
  • DS will also be 3 in Aug I have thought about this also but at this point we only use the stroller for big outings and even if I was to get pregnant today I am not sure he would be willing to be in the stoller.  I agree I would hold off as long as you can and see how things are at that time.

My DD#1 was 3yrs8mths when her sister was born. I never needed a double stroller, and actually I hated the idea of one.

  • I would invest in a good carrier before buying a double stroller, I think you would get more use out of it.

That being said, DD (3.5) still rides in our Phil and Ted most days but we walk so much living in Chicago.  I can still carry DS in the Ergo without any problems and he is 16 months and 27 pounds.  So even if your LO isn't ready to give up the stroller right away, you should do fine with a good carrier!

I would say 99% of friends with 2 kids use the double stroller city. The other 1% uses a carrier. You can ask [EDITED]. I ask a few questions there and usually get good quick answers! I use a stroller a lot so I am more biased to the stroller.

  • My older son was 2 1/2 when my second was born and we used the BOB Duallie and also purchased the Joovy Ultralite Caboose.  I love the Joovy, because it allows your older child to sit when he/she gets too tired to walk (perfect for zoos, shopping, etc when your older child might want to walk more).
  • I didn't read through the responses so this may have been suggested but..I don't know what kind of stroller you have now, but with many of the single strollers you can get a toddler stand attachment that works great! This way they can walk with you as much as they choose, or stand on the "skate board style attachment" if they get tired of walking!

  • Wait until you are pg before buying one or a carrier. You never know how long it can take to be pg. you don't want a stroller you can't use. What if he is 6 before you have another one?

  • It really varies on the kids. I ditched the double stroller right around my sons second birthday and he hasn't been in a stroller once since--not even at amusement parks or when traveling. My friend has a five and three year old and is still using a double on a very regular basis.
