Birth announcement etiquette question

We move a little over a year ago. We met our neighbors before we moved in and have talked to them briefly like in passing in our driveways. This year they sent us a Christmas card. Would you send them a birth announcement or don't bother. I wouldn't have even thought about it if they didn't send the Christmas card. WDYT?

Re: Birth announcement etiquette question

  • I would go ahead and send one.  We sent one to our neighbors who we hadn't known very well.  I think they appreciated it.

  • I think it would be fine. In my situation we've hung out with our neighbors quite a few times we all get a long well. I wouldn't say we're close but definitely neighborly however they have been struggling with infertility and just recently stopped pursuing it and I don't think it would be right if I sent them one. I already feel bad when I'm outside getting ready to go somewhere and she happens to be outside too. One time she asked how I felt and I was so nervous that I just blurted out I feel pregnant ugh totally wrong to say but I just never know what to say and I hate being rude or insensitive!

Ugh that's tough. I'm so bad in those situations too. I never know what to say and I'm always scared I end up sounding rude. Hopefully everything works out for them :(
  • Our neighbors sent us a Christmas card the first year we moved in (and every year since). We thought it was a really nice gesture. I never sent out birth announcements for DD but would've sent them one if I had and plan to send them one if I get around to making them for DS. We now send them Christmas cards too. It's nice to hear about their lives periodically since we don't often chat.

Yes, I would send one for relationship building and I would consider it similar to sending a Christmas card, which they already did.

Not to steal the thread ;) but have a similar question.. We've hung out with our new neighbors a couple times and have gotten along great. (We moved in in March.) We're having a couple "baby - q" shower at our house with 30 or so friends & fam. We're getting a keg, grilling out, music, more of a party vibe. Haven't decided if we'll even do a gift opening session. Would you invite them? On one hand, I don't want them to feel like they should give us a gift, on the other hand, it'll be a good time right next door and we'd love for them to partake. Thoughts?

Pretend you were having a BBQ and it had nothing to do with having baby, would you invite them?

  • I'm on the bad team, lol! I'm friendly with the neighbors on either side of me, but I don't even know the one couples' names! And they've been my neighbor for four years. :\">

I will stop and talk to them, and show of the baby when I see them!
