Desperate for answers. Colicky Baby!! Is it really a colicky baby

Poor this cries everytime he eats and the stays up pushing and grunting and screaming and I stay up w him to soothe him until it's time to feed him again and we start the whole process again.. This happens during night time or day time.
He's pooping normal and farts and burps as well.
We switched him yesterday to nutramigen and I'm not sure if things are worst or better!!!!
So my question to all of the parents out there! How long did you wait to see any positive changes in your baby!
Or what did you do if you didn't wait and did it work!??
And do you thing gripe water really works !!?

Thank you.

  • My baby was doing the same thing for a while, so I understand your frustration and concern for your LO. I began giving him Gerber Soothe Probiotics drops once a day and Mommy Bliss Gripe water in the evenings and that has helped tremendously. Both products can be found at CVS. The probiotics drops are around $30 but it's worth every drop. You may want to check your LO's mouth to make sure he doesn't have thrush. If he doesn't and you try the products above it could be acid reflux and worth mentioning to your pediatrician. I hope this helps!

  • Oh and both products worked within 30 minutes. Also, try to set a routine for baby- mine is the 3 B's (bath, bottle and bedtime). He doesn't always fall asleep immediately but the bath does calm him quite a bit.
  • I don't know if your LO has colic. Mine did and it was awful. No meds worked. Gripe water did nothing.

The only thing that worked was a hot water bottle. I filled it with hot tap water. Wrapped it in a receiving blanket. Then swaddled LO as tight as I could. Laid the hot water bottle on my lap. Laid LO over the bottle (tummy down). Put the soother in his mouth and bounced my leg up and down. It worked in about 20 seconds. It only worked while he was on it. It's the only thing that made a difference.

It stopped two weeks before he turned three months. It was just like a switch. All of a sudden, no more colic.

Good luck. Hopefully it is not colic. Definitely go get a hot water bottle.

  • we had switched our formula from gentle ease to nutramigen per the pediatricians suggestion because my LO has such a hard time with gas.  My lo slept all day the first day and I was like "oh this is amazing" .....but.....then she screamed bloody murder for the night and the next two days and went from 1 poop a day to 3 ...I ended up switching her back because I couldn't handle the nonstop kicking and screaming.  all of the reviews for this formula were amazingly good but I had a horrible experience with it.  good luck ... I know every one is different

  • I've been having the same issue.  Non stop grunting and looking like he needs to poop and it takes a while but he usually ends up pooping like at least 4x a day.  My lil guy isn't constipated nor in pain when he grunts and he burps well!

Idk if you're doing formula or breastmilk and idk what your schedule is for feeding but I'm EBF and was feeding on demand and also he likes to soothe by nursing.  I tried gripe water and it didn't do much.  Also tried pedaling the legs and pushing them up to his chest... and tummy massage.  Nothing really seemed to help.  My lil guy is 5 weeks old almost.  My doula suggested it could be the overfeeding.  I know that with formula (if you're doing formula) a lot of mom's will overfeed and not realize it.  Even though my lil guy uses the boob to soothe, he ends up eating instead of just kind of sucking on it.

I started feeding every 3 hours or more and since our sessions are usually 10-15 mins long only, I also burp every few mins so that he doesn't get too much air swallowed since he also has spit up problems!  I just started yesterday and it seems to be helping already!  Less grunting and less spit up!  BUT my pediatrician did say that unless they're in pain, it's usually nothing but normal newborn behavior as well as "happy spitting".  Look into how much your lil one is feeding and taking in at each feeding.

Did you consult with your LOs pedi about this? I would take him in to see about GERD. Mine had this and would cry and scream every time he spit up. Also, when I switched LOs formula it took a good week before his system adjusted. So you won't know for a bit.

  • Have you heard of the book The Happiest Baby on the Block? He is a pediatrician that talks about colic and how it is more related to the baby's ability to cope with the changes he or she has gone through. I would highly recommend reading it but he says to try the 5 S's which are swaddling, sshing, side/stomach position (in your arms) swinging and sucking. He talks about how to do those things correctly and why they work .
