TTM about PPD therapy

I have my first appointment for PPD counseling next week, and I'm really apprehensive about it. They didn't give me much on what to expect, and I'm super uncomfortable telling anyone IRL about it.

Would anyone here mind sharing their experience? I'll keep watch of my PMs too in case you'd be more comfortable sharing that way.

Should I try and make it so DH can come? Is it OK for me to bring LO?

I don't have any experience with PPD therapy, but I am going to my first counseling session tomorrow night.  I have been suffering more from anxiety than depression, but it is taking a toll on me. Good luck with your session and I hope you can find some relief.

eta:  I'm not bringing LO for the reason katybriggs mentioned.

  • I have been going to PPD therapy for a few months. Have you ever seen a therapist before? If yes, its very simila to a regular therapy session. If not, then you will sit and talk to this therapist and he/she will ask you questions. the first few sessions will just build a relationship. It took me a while to trust and be comfortable with my therapist and now I tell her everything! She is awesome and has helped me feel much more like myself!
I wouldn't bring DH for the first session. Its best for you to establish a relationship first. If he has questions or does nor understand PPD (most men don't) then bring him along. Don't bring LO, it will be a distraction for sure.

Sometimes just talking through what you're feeling and what's happening is really helpful.  I would start with just telling your pregnancy and birth story.  Let things go from there.

And I agree that if possible you should go alone.

I am a MH counselor myself, and sought help for my own antepartum depression last year - It's excellent you are taking this step!

If you're not sure what to expect logistics-wise, it might help to call and ask to speak with your therapist and find out - ask about DH coming too! I usually spoke with new clients about the structure of the first session and a little about my therapeutic style on the phone before meeting, which helped to ease some nerves and get a better idea of what someone was looking to get out of counseling.

I'm so sorry you're struggling right now, and I really hope your session goes well!
