Some comments on the other TV poll made we wonder--Do you keep the TV on when you are not actively watching a show?

Yes, we use it for background noise/etc. quite often.

No, the TV is only on when we are watching a show (or listening to music.)

Re: Keeping TV on

  • I do once the kids are in bed. When they're awake tv is only on if we're watching it.

  • @kdc2007 I love you! I'm already trying to figure out my work schedule so I can get home in time to see games.

I put the TV on before naps, and keep it on so there is background noise in case the dog barks or something, don't want her to be startled awake.

We only keep it on when my husband or I watch a show or if we are streaming music on the Apple TV.  If it's not actively being used, it's off.
  • Normally no... but I am with you @kdc2007  - once the world cup starts, all bets are off.

  • @kdc2007 Our league had a meeting and made it a priority to finish the season before World Cup.

Once LO is in bed, I usually put it on even if I'm not watching. DH is usually on his computer for a while at night, so I like the background noise. It also makes me feel a little more connected to the outside world.

Eta: I often turn it on while he naps too.

  • DH keeps it on just because, I do not.  So yes, but not all the time.

  • It is usually on for background noise when we are home. It is a bad habit, and I don't want DD to be a child who is always watching TV. She used to never pay attention, but now that she notices more, we will be turning it off. Luckily, DH didn't put up a fight about this and agrees.

  • My dh didn't even own a tv before we got married 2 years ago! We don't have cable. We may download a show or watch something on the smart tv a few times a week. Having said this, there are times when I miss bravo and bad reality tv. Lol.
  • Well...we're a tv family (FFWC?)  So it's on a LOT because someone is watching it a lot.  The boys are in daycare so unless it's really bad weather and they need something to settle them all and a movie gets put on, they don't watch tv during the day.  When we come home I follow their lead.  If they head right for the playroom or whatever, that's great.  If I don't need to do a lot for dinner, we go outside but the tv gets put on at some point every night and DH and I watch it when the boys go to bed.

  • I don't like a ton of extra noise (which is why I have two children...) so unless we're watching something it's usually on but muted. Drives my husband crazy. But I am already crazy so I like it.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.
