Around 2 months old my son started LOVING his. Never to go to sleep or nap time but he loved to just lay there and look at it. Originally I bought one of those crank ones that matched his room decor but cranking that thing every 2-3 minutes got old really quick. If you do get one, get a battery operated one.

My son loved his mobile. It was battery operated with a projector & music, heartbeat sounds. I am definately going to be using again with this baby. It even had a remote, so you don't have to go in the room and rehit the buttons. https://www.fisher-price.com/en_US/brands/babytoys/products/48400
My niece had mentioned that she may be knitting one with little dachshunds on it similar to an ornament she made us last Christmas that I loved. If she does end up giving me one, I will use it, but I am not going to buy one otherwise.
We have one very similar to this and DD loved it! It really is functional, because the parts move as the mobile swings around, and the black and white checked design on the feet apparently is very appealing to babies. Around 2-3 months I could lay her in her crib and it would buy me 15 minutes of time to shower or poop or whatever while she just stared at it and smiled. So worth it to me.
we had a projector that my LO liked much more than the mobile- it projected images on the ceiling and played music for a period of time before it turned off. I will use it for this LO too- it sat on a night stand next to the crib.
I registered for one. Although now thinking out it I'm worried the cats may try to play with it and knock in down onher. Well ggreat. Another thing to worry about.
I decided against one for a few reasons. First we have cats that would likely find it entertaining & therefore encourage them to hang out in the crib while baby isn't there. Second, baby will be sleeping in the bassinet until she is at least 3 months old & then I have heard that it's not a great idea to have a mobile once the baby is pulling themselves up in the crib because they can pull the mobile down. That would potentially mean a very short period of time that the mobile was actually useful.
I registered for one that also projects stars or something on the ceiling. I'm a FTM so I'm not sure what's going to work for baby. But I'm willing to try anything that could potentially keep baby entertained and happy.
We have a Fisher Price one, battery operated, and once the baby is too old for the mobile there's a lightbox with music they can use. My boys used the lightbox for a long time and really liked it. My youngest stopped using it only about a month ago when we moved him in with his brother.
The mobile part they can only use until 5 months (once they start possibly sitting up it's a safety hazard). They don't care about it for the first month or so, so it's only good for a limited time.
We bought a 2nd mobile, Tiny Love brand, when DS2 was born, but that thing sucked batteries dry. We ended up giving DS1's mobile to DS2 instead. It's in storage now and we probably won't use it again. The Fisher Price one has worked out really well, though.
I think they're cute. We already have one since we're not redecorating the nursery from DD so we'll use it again. She loved it for several months when she was tiny, then when she started reaching for it we hung it higher. Now it's just for room decor. When LO is born, I'll move it lower again for him to enjoy.
I'm a FTM so I don't have much advice nor much of an opinion. We will try the mobile and see what happens. If he loves it, great, if not, we'll take it down.

Re: Crib Mobile or Not?
I was given one with our first. Both of my older girls ignored it. So I doubt we'll even put it up this time.
