Pregnant after 35

Flying in the first Trimester?

Bay Area to Chicago next month.  I'll be 10 weeks... Has anyone else flown in the first trimester?

Re: Flying in the first Trimester?

  • I have flown in every trimester up to about 6-7 weeks before due date. Both short flights (2-3hrs) as well as from the US to Europe and back and from Europe to South Africa.

    Doing the same with #2.
    It's totally fine.

  • Yep. I flew at 9 weeks. You're fine unless a doctor has said otherwise (due to a high-risk pregnancy or something like that).

  • I've flown then and as everyone else said it's no big deal. I did move myself to aisle seats closer to the bathroom when I booked tickets and I always make sure I don't go through the full body scanners. I'm paranoid that in 20 years they will discover they aren't that great. Usually any female TSA employee has been great to let me switch lines as needed.

  • I am at 7 weeks and had to fly at 6 weeks. I do not think flying is a risk to the baby but, if I could do it over again I would probably not have flown unless I had too. My 3 day trip to Texas from California for a wedding was incredibly hard on my body when I should have been resting. I was so uncomfortable on the flights it knocked me out for the entire trip. My stomach would cramp when we took off and landed and sitting in coach killed my back which is still aching.

I am a tough cookie and I truly felt awful. However, in terms of a risk to the baby I think everything is okay. My trip was SO short that I think it was just very hard on my little body.

I am sure everyone is different and this was just my experience.

I fly cross country at least once per month and have had zero issues. Aisle seats are a good idea, wear support hose and drink tons of water.

  • I've even wondering about this. I have two trips coming up that I must fly for. I didn't fly during my other pregnancies so I had no experience at all, and Google can be awful when trying to research something like that.
  • I don't think flying is an issue.  But I have been asking to do a pat down instead of going through any scanners.  Even in crowded airports it has not been an issue and I haven't had to wait more than a few minutes for one.  Personally, the new scanner machines are so new that I don't trust that they've tested them out well on pregnant women.

I did and had no problems. I did tell te tsa security agent so I did not harrowing go through the X-ray machines- I had to be patted down on the side.
  • I had 4 flights during my first trimester.  No issues at all.
