Fatigue

Hi Ladies,

So I'm at 7w1d now (I think I am, I might be 6w1d though, haven't had my dating u/s yet). My fatigue is TERRIBLE. I am getting 7-8 hours of sleep at night and I still can barely keep my eyes open during the day. Anyone else having trouble with this?

I work a full time job and can't afford to use any sick/vacation days anymore. I want to save those til the third trimester (I only have 5 vacation days and 2 sick days left!). Yesterday it was so bad, I nearly fell asleep on my drive home. I took an hour nap when I got home and I was still tired.

Help!

Yes, I've been going to bed really early, and I still have trouble keeping my eyes open after lunch. It should pass in a few weeks, hopefully.

  • unfortunately this is something most of us are stuck dealing with. It sucks! as PP mentioned exercise really does help. I know it sounds counterproductive and the idea of even a short walk can seem daunting but it really does help many ladies! Best of luck!

  • Yeah. It's pretty bad here too. I had to return to work yesterday for committee work, and it continues for two weeks. When I get home all I want to do is lie down. But then DS comes in and says, "playroom please" and I can't resist.

  • Fatigue in the first trimester is pretty common. It usually gets better sometime early in 2nd tri. My husband said with DD, it was like a light switch and one day around 13 weeks I just had my energy back. I can't wait for it to happen again!

  • Fatigue has been one of my only symptoms. Ive been going to bed at 8:30 which is very unlike me. I have found if I get up early and exercise in the mornings, I am able to stay awake at work. This past weekend I did nothing but sleep and eat and run. I slept 17 hours on Saturday.

  • I hadn't thought much on exercise, and I actually am meeting with my trainer tonight for a run and some very simple TRX. Maybe I should switch to meeting with her in the mornings so it can help for my energy throughout the day.

@TXUltraRunner, sleeping 17 hours sounds gloooooooorious!!!!

Thanks for all the advice ladies!!
  • You are not alone.  I fell asleep searching for a movie on tv the other day - I was flipping through the "guide" and I fell asleep - DH was hysterical laughing at me.

Unfortunately, for me, it doesn't seem to matter how much or how little sleep I get - I'm just exhausted all of the time.

I'm exhausted 24/7. It's horrible. I remember it getting better in the second tri so I'm just taking it day by day until that magical 13 week mark. ;)

  • I dozed off while watching my son yesterday. Just for a minute but still. I just couldn't help it. It was the same last time too. I second what everyone else said. I perked right up early in my second tri so I'm just waiting for that.

  • This is me too. I don't remember being so absolutely exhausted last time around, and it's killing me. Any kind of physical exertion just completely wipes me out. Last night I felt not too bad so I went for a 30 min walk with the dog and immediately came back and went to bed. Then this morning I got up and had a shower. I couldn't even get dressed after I had to lie down again for 5 min before continuing. I feel like a baby but honestly I am so tired I could pass out sometimes. I cannot wait for this to pass!!

  • I don't mean to be a total Debbie Downer, but the fatigue did not let up in 2nd tri for me in my last pregnancy. I sure hope it does this time, but we shall see. I only mention it because everyone around me was telling me the fatigue should get better in 2nd tri, and when it didn't, I legitimately thought something was wrong with me. My doctor wasn't concerned, but I asked her to do some blood work anyway. It all came back normal and she said, you're pregnant, it's normal.

Right now I am more concerned with the nausea going away. I think it makes me more tired to fight back the urge to puke all the time. The nausea DID go away for me last time right at the start of 2nd tri. I am hoping for the same on that front this time.

  • YES. And chasing an 18-month-old around the house all day doesn't help either!

  • I feel ya. I'm cancelling my trip from Pittsburgh to DC to visit my sister this weekend. I wanted to tell her the good news in person so bad. Now I hope she understands why. There's no way I could safely stay awake and drive right after work and be able to be a tourist all weekend. Esp without energy drinks! Now I hope I can reschedule before she leaves Rome. :(
  • I'm tired 24/7 too! I have huge mommy guilt about it with it interfering with my 21 month old DD...it's horrible. I'm praying I get my energy back soon!

Same story over here. I am always so tired! Right when I come home from work I need a nap.

  • I've been able to sneak in an afternoon nap, but it doesn't seem to help for long. I know exercise would help, but I can't seem to find the energy to do that!
  • If its serious have they checked your blood tests yet? My first pregnancy i couldnt get out of bed, found out it was because my thyroid was so imbalanced!! This time around it feels odd to not be wanting to sleep 24/7!

  • I have noticed that when I get a burst of energy, I end up overdoing it and paying for it the next day!
  • I am in the same boat. Some days are better than others but for the most part I am in bed by 8 and asleep by 9 at the latest. Yesterday was a bad day and I tried to nap at lunch and then ended up leaving work at 4 and took a nap til almost 6:30 and then was back in bed by 9. I have learned to not really make plans of any sort at night because I am pretty much worthless.

  • Fatigue is the worst! It's my only symptom and it's extreme! I am with all you ladies! My secret is I eat my lunch at my desk at 11ish, then at noon I drive to an empty parking lot and sleep in my car for the lunch hour!! It's been my only saving grace in the middle of the day! I literally snore, and it is awesome :)

  • My fatigue was so overwhelming. I would sometimes need a nap 3 hours after waking! At 9 weeks we found out we're having twins, and I suspect that had something to do with my extreme fatigue. Four days ago, the constant nausea and fatigue was suddenly gone and has not returned. I am praying it's gone for good. Currently 10 weeks and hoping this is my reprieve...

fatigue is my only symptom and it's been tough. their afternoon naps are usually timed together and i'll try to get an hour nap in, but it doesn't always work out. not sure how i'd handle if i wohm, though the parking lot nap is genius!
