Srs bsnss y'all: How did you find your psychologist?

Yay for personal information!

I'm pretty sure I'm depressed but haven't been diagnosed.  My insurance doesn't require any sort of referral and there are a million in my network.  I tried looking up reviews on the ones closest to me but none have reviews.  I don't know anyone who goes to one.  Do I have to write down their names and put the in a circle and spin a bottle to choose one?  Eenie meanie miney moe that shit?  How did you find yours?

Halp, I need your experience and anecdotes 'n junk.

  • I found mine through my local bumpie group.

I hope you find someone that works for you.  How much does insurance cover for this? Could you go to a couple of them to see if you "gel" with their personalities?

  • Also, is the local bumpie board for your area busy?  Maybe they would have some ideas.

  • No experience with psychologists, but I do love my regular doctor and trust their suggestions.  They network with various other doctors and tend to know the better doctors in the area.

For any specialist, I call my regular doctor and ask for their suggestions.  Then I compare against my insurance's provider list.
  • My insurance says that it covers 45 visits a year but i'm going to HR today to get more detailed information.  I'm very new to this insurance thing (ffmc) so I'll need them to talk to me like I'm 5.  My local bump board is pretty much dead.

i didn't think about the possibility of "trying out" docs.

i'm terrible at this whole grown up thing.

  • Psychologytoday.com (find a therapist) is a good resource. You can browse on there what people specialize in as well as if they take your insurance. I'm a counselor and I agree with pp's that say make sure you find someone that fits you well.

  • My GP recommended him for the type of problems I was having. Mine recommended we try three sessions with him to see if it would work out. It did. I've been with him for several years now.

Best of luck to you OP.

Ask your family dr for a recommendation or like others said, pick one and if you don't like them, find another. It's ok to try out different drs.
  • I like to check out their website (if they have one) and see what their specialties are. I have a dissociative disorder, so I found mine via the ISSTD website.

I also look at professional bios, photos, things like that. I'm a weird hippie in that I like to see if I get any kind of "vibe" off a photo before making the decision to book an appt.

If the first one (or few) you see are jackasses, or just not your style, don't be discouraged. It can take a bit of time and trial and error to find someone you can have a good connection with.

  • My first one was recommended by my OB and I loved her, but then she moved. I tried two more based on recommendations from some friends on FB and loved one and still see her. Also, if you work, your employer might off some form of Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which can get you some free initial sessions with someone and you can use that to see if you like them.

It can definitely take some trying to find someone you click with, don't give up or get discouraged if you don't click with the first couple you try. I can usually tell after the first session if I like the person or not.

  • I looked through insurance and looked for people closest to my area.. but I live in a rural area, so most of them were in the two major cities near me and I didn't want them, so I only had a few options and luckily I clicked with the first female therapist I found.
I hope you can find one. I know insurance stuff sucks sometimes.

  • I found mine when DD was an infant through a new mom/fussy baby network. I still use her..
  • My work has an employee assistance program. You get 8 sessions and they refer you out after that. Thinking about trying it.
the therapist mentioned that.  i'm def going to look into it.
