I would say the carseat on a plane is the only one I don't run into IRL. Although Parenting used to educate me on the morals of companies more than I would ever research on my own...
I feel like in real life so many people are so much less informed than all the ladies on here. I've seen improper car seat safety on FB, people using formula way past its expiration, people who argue hard-soled shoes are best for beginning walkers, etc.
I also get surprised when people think that babies need teeth to eat real food. But then I think back to before I had my LO, and I bet I would have thought that too.
I think of the people around me who have had kids in the last 7ish years, its a mix. Some dont ERF but will EBF and cloth diaper. Or they'll ERF but wont cloth diaper etc. BLW seems to be pretty popular across the board though.
Like @sympkin said, no one ERF around here. I did have 2 people tell me about BLW IRL and I think a lot of people BF past 1, but not past 2. I never would have thought to bring the car seat on the plane if it weren't for you ladies, and so happy I did.
BLW, EBF (my friends think it's "weird" to BF till 1), baby wearing, ERF, almond milk vs cow's milk, I also feel like I come across more people IRL that support CIO
It kills me but I see soooo many people IRL that don't know how to properly put a baby in a car seat. Huge, heavy coats, clasped down by their belly button, super loose straps.
Also encouragement to avoid induction early or just encouragement to let pregnancy go for awhile doesn't seem to be present IRL. Just last week someone was talking about how they induced on their due date because they were done with being pregnant, and then there were many issues with the labor/delivery/health of baby and I couldn't help but thinking "maybe baby wasn't ready yet...."
I must live in a super crunchy area because almost everyone at least attempts of BF, cloth diapers, does BLW and baby wears. Not too many people around here do CIO though and they all turn the car seat at a year. Which is weird the doctors around here actually really recommend baby wearing, so maybe that's why?
Everybody I know starts solids at 4 months. Hardy anybody baby wears. Baby led weaning isn't very popular. Everybody switches their car seat to front facing by age 1.
For me, my close friends would probable fit in very well on the bump. They all did extended breastfeeding, one of them exclusively pumping after 8 months. They did (or plan to) rear face for 2 years and one of them did BLW but all waited till 6 months for solids (I didn't- we started at 4 months). One still wears her baby even though he is a year and half. I am not sure if it is the area or just my friends?
Pretty much what everyone has already said. My big issue is car seat safety. I find it absolutely disturbing how many people are so lax when it comes to car seat safety. And they are so easily influenced. My SIL did not RF her kids past 1, and they both were in boosters as soon as they met the 40 lb requirement. She had started to come around to my way of thinking recently, when we started talking about the research and what not. Unfortunately for me, there is a car seat "tech" who works as a paramedic for the ambulance in her town (SIL does their books). I guess the tech told her that she does not agree with ERF when the kids legs start to get longer because she has seen too many head injuries caused from their legs flying up. So now, because of this 1 tech out of so many who preach ERF, we are in an epic battle over when to turn Madeline around. MIL has joined SIL's camp, since she wanted to turn her from the start. I don't see this being resolved peacefully
@daffy2k - that stinks. I'm just flummoxed though how many family members feel like they get a say at all. It shouldn't have to be "resolved" at all - it's your call and your call only!
I feel like I know Mama's IRL who cloth diaper, EBF (one lady until her son was almost 7), and Mama's who never even try BF, Mama's who vax, and apparently Mama's that don't. Mama's who start food at 4-6 months or Mama's who do BLW where the baby isn't eating regular meals until 2. I know Mama's who would NEVER CIO and Mama's who do from almost day 1.
What I don't know is any Mama who rear faces beyond 18 months at the absolute most.
