Could DD have allergies already?

We have a swing set up in the family room. It is set up right in front of the fireplace. When I brought DS home from school today I set DD in the swing for about five minutes so I could quickly do something. She was whining and then started crying so I grabbed her. There were tears in one of her eyes so I thought she had actually cried her first real tears.

Then a couple of hours later I could not get her to take a nap and needed to make dinner for DS so I put her in her swing again. This time for about 15 minutes. She was quiet. I went to grab her and that same eye was tearing and her eyelid was all red. Her nose was also stuffy on that same side. I put a compress on her eye and suctioned out her nose and now she seems fine.

Is it possible it's something from the fireplace (which we have not burned in months) or something on the swing that is irritating her? She has been in her swing before in the same spot without issues.

Re: Could DD have allergies already?

  • If it were allergies, both eyes would probably have been red. Plus, it's not possible for a newborn to have allergies of that type (coming from the wife of an allergist). If I get somehing in my eye, my nose can get runny on that same side.

  • Ok that is a good point. Just seemed weird it happened both times she was in the swing an after she was fine.

I see an allergist for myself. I asked uf it was possible one of my girls had allergies and he said no not this early. 6 months is the earliest he'd ever diagnosed an allergy. He did say that dust, environmental irritations can cause eyes to water, sneezing, etc and it didnt mean allergies- just our bodies reacting normally.

  • i was told by my pediatrician that seasonal allergies usually don't start before age 3 at the earliest.  i'm not sure about environmental/home allergies though.

that said, we do think kiddo is experiencing seasonal allergies this year.  he is an eye rubbing machine lately, even first thing in the morning when he's surely not tired yet.
  • We have been seeing an allergist for my DS (27 months) and he said the same thing that previous posters mentioned. They need to be exposed for some period of time for an allergy to develop.
