Let's talk about nuts

And eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat - have you done it with the little ones? What do your peds recommend? Ours recommended holding off, but another doctor in the same practice told my friend not to. So it confuses me that there's such wide range in recommendations. We have no history of allergies so I'm leaning towards not waiting but wondering what you guys did.

Our pedi said to wait until 1 for eggs and peanut butter. He didn't say anything about fish and I can't remember shellfish. I haven't given her any of those yet but probably will before she is 1. She's 8.5mo now so I'll probably wait until 10mo but then introduce those at lunch after that incase she does have a reaction.

  • My dr. said no honey, egg whites or citrus fruit. He isn't worried about peanut butter. He also said the reason for no egg whites is because it is used in making vaccinations and he doesn't want LO to develop a reaction of some kind.
  • My pedi said to wait on peanut butter, shellfish, honey until after a year. I tried egg and he had an allergic reaction. The dr said the reason to wait is that their bodies are better able to handle the reaction if they have one. Can you call your Dr. And ask if that's their general recommendation or a specific rec. for your LO due to her medical history?
  • My doc didn't say anything directly, but the handout they give said no fish, shellfish, nuts , or eggs. She has had little flakes of salmon, and will probably have eggs sooner than later, but we'll wait on the others.

  • We have done peanut butter and eggs and salmon, no shellfish because the opportunity hasn't arisen as of yet and we've had no reactions, nor any family history of food allergies. Doctor said no honey till after 1 and we are waiting on dairy till then because of a suspected dairy protein allergy, which to be honest I don't know she really even has anymore since I have reintroduced dairy with no problem (mostly BF here).

I have to say this post was NOT what I was expecting it to be, haha. Mind in the gutter over here apparently!

  • LO eats fish for dinner twice a week without any issues. She has toast , she's had eggs once and wasn't really a fan. I'm going to try them with her again soon. The only thing I haven't tried with her yet out of that list is peanut butter, but I plan on doing that soon.
  • Thanks ladies! Looks like not everyone's doing the same - just like the pediatricians. I think i may introduce egg yolk scrambled eggs just because it'll give some breakfast options. I didn't have peanut butter till i was way into my 20s (we didn't have it growing up), so i'm not overly eager to try that, although fish, that i had as soon as i could chew (the beauties of the mediterranean). So i may do that too.

jlp0528 - glad you got my double entendre ;) Sorry this wasn't as interesting!

  • I was told that newer studies show that by waiting to introduce high allergen foods it actually makes the body treat them as foreign substances which will cause more of a reaction and this is why more and more kids are allergic to so many things. So I was given the go ahead to introduce everything other than honey and shellfish. I was told to wait until after a year for those.

So far she hasn't had peanut butter though, I'm not a peanut butter fan and I just haven't given her much toast lately either.

I have given her scrambled eggs, strawberries and milk products.
  • Our pediatrician only said to avoid honey till one tear. Everything else she said as long as there are isn't a family history of allergies, that we can introduce everything else one at a time. We've introduced everything except peanut butter, it just hasn't come up yet.

  • DD has been slow taking to solids so I haven't even thought about any of this. For DS our pediatrician had us give him a cooked egg yolk prior to introducing the egg whites. He still hates eggs to this day. I actually though peanut butter was age 2 but I am probably just not remembering correctly.

DD has eaten all of that...eggs, salmon, burgers, berries, ....haven't tried shelf fish yet but I wouldn't really hold back on feeding her anything.  She will only eat "people" food now....baby food went right out the window once she got a taste of what we were eating :)

  • DD had a reaction today to peaches but we went to the pedi and were told it was a topical reactionost likely from the acid. She said it's not an issue and we can continue to feed that food. Same thing happened with whole pieces of fresh mango. I felt like it wasn't an allergic reaction but we went anyway. Doc asked if we had a history of food allergies and I'm allergic to almonds so I told her that and she said she'd probably only hold off on nuts until 1 and anything else was fair game. At the 6 month visit the pedi said anything was allowed and that we didn't have to wait to introduce new things and if we wanted to be cautious wait 24 hours. We pretty much used the 24 hour advice.
