Secondary IF

On heparin but no clotting disorder

An unconventional doctor I've seen for a 2nd opinion, has recommended I do Heparin injections for 45 days + acyclovir, and this he thinks will be the answer to our prayers to get our 2nd and (last child). I've had 3 mc's back to back and haven't been pregnant since July 2013. I am 41 years and am feeling so impatient. Met with my 1st fertility doctor to discuss what this other doctor recommended and besides it being far out for being beneficial, she thinks that 45 days couldn't hurt either, as long as I'm being monitored regularly. I've already missed 2 months, due to testing etc. by this 2nd opinion doctor, and now I'm SO impatient. So, if this regime of heparin, acyclovir, more protein, less carbs, more exercise PM doesn't work, then I will be getting closer to considering IVF.

Have you taken Heparin w/any side effects? Even if you haven't, I could really just use someone to talk to who is struggling with secondary infertility as well.

Re: On heparin but no clotting disorder

  • So my BFF never had clotting issues but had a MMC about 13 weeks in. Second time she finally got pregnant again they had her in heparin and it worked out beautifully. Maybe a blood flow issue without clotting? I'm sure the other women w more experience on this will correct me (please do I'm speculating) but welcome and sorry for your miscarriages and I hope the unconventional is all it takes :)

  • I haven't done my intro on this board yet, still lurking. Just wanted to say that I'm experience almost the same thing. As you can see in my siggy, my son had a major blood clot in his umbilical cord and I've had three mc since January. I was tested for blood clotting disorders but my ob said there are certainly other genetic factors that leave us predisposed to blood clots or other blood issues. I am meeting with an RE on the 23rd but I fully expect him to start me on Lovenox. I can't try again or even get through an entire normal pregnancy without knowing that I'm doing everything I can to prevent something bad happening again. I think if you are being monitored, it can't hurt. I'm also speculating that maybe the Heparin will increase blood flow to the baby when those blood vessels are so teeny tiny? If Femara, Lovenox and whatever else he gives me doesn't work, I'm considering going straight to IVF as well. I'm sorry for your struggles. It's so frustrating! Do you mind if I ask about your more protein, less carbs diet?

  • My situation is way different. I am heterozygous for Leiden Factor V, so I do technically have a blood clotting disorder but I've never had a blood clot. I was on heparin during my last pregnancy. There were no side effects for me. Other than having to give myself a shot, I didn't even notice it.

I have 2 clotting disorders and was on lovenox during my pregnancy and now take a blood thinner every day and will for the rest of my life. No side effects. Having a shot every day sucks but you get used to it.

    Hi Goldengirl,
Thanks for lurking...lol! I am currently still doing heparin - I have yet to do the injection, but will have to in a matter of days. Yes, I'm a wimp! Huge fear of needles. I do think that icing the area for about 5 mins. helps A LOT. I really hope your appointment goes very well, even if you are told injections are recommended. As for your question about carbs & protein + exercise....
    1. Daily exercise between 4-8pm, 30 mins. HR 140's
    2. Increase protein intake to 100gms/day
    3. Lower carbs to 110gms/day
    4. If you're not a vegetarian, eat a piece of chicken before bed (sounds funny, I know -recommended to aid in sleep + protein)

Another thing my dr considers I try is Intralipid Infusion on cycle day 8-10 if TTC

    Hope this helps! :)
