June 2014 Moms

Another June Bug Arrival!

Gaven Stone FINALLY made his arrival on 6/5/14. After 42hrs of hard labor he enter the world at 12:07am. We are all doing well. Sore as all get out, but good. Pic below.

Long Version:
At 6:30am on Tuesday, June 3rd I woke to my water breaking. My due date wasn't until the 16th so I was caught completely off guard. Called the dr's, took a shower, dropped off our DS at grandma's and headed to hospital. Contractions hadn't started, but I kept gushing. Oh my, I never knew you could gush and still have so much.
After getting monitored in triage, they checked us into the LAST room left. It was more of a monitoring room but that's all they had left. There were moms after us having to deliver on gurney's . :(. Nurses were saying it had to do with air pressure. Never knew that!
So, since my water broke but my contractions were really spaced out they started a foley bulb. About 6pm that evening it fell out. So, that would put me at 3-4cm. They let me eat dinner since I hadn't had anything since morning. The excitement and the unknown kept me from eating, even though this is my second. My water never broke with my first and everyone kept telling me second babies always come faster. (Not for everyone!)
After a fabulous dinner, they started pitocin. Contractions started coming on strong, got my epidural around 3am and continued progressing, but slowly. Around 7am our little guy started not handling the contractions very well. His heart rate started dipping with each contraction and some were down in the 40's. I was so scared for him and just wanted him out. They stopped the pit and had me laying in every position possible to brIng it back up.
I asked about a c-section but the doctors and nurses said we were still ok since baby was recovering well after every one. They had me switching positions every hour and did an amniocentesis to help cushion him. (Dr's thought it was a cord compression issue). That helped but his heart rate kept dipping, just not as low. My nurses were wonderful!!!! Kept me updated and encouraged the whole time. They would not leave the room unless my husband was there and when they did they returned with 10-15mins. I felt like I was their only patient. Finally around 9pm I was having a lot of pressure and wanting to push. Mind you that at this point I've had two hours of sleep for the past two days. Well, come to find out my little one was face up, just like his brother was. Ugh! They tried to transition him a 1/4in in either direction so he would come out easier. No such luck. Dr said this was going to be a hard delivery. We press on. 2.5hrs later baby will not move past my pelvis bone. So, dr said we either do a c-section now or we try the vacuum. If the vacuum doesn't work then we would be doing an emergency c-section. Thankfully during this whole time LO heart rate was doing great. We decided to do the vacuum as the dr said he was right there just needed a little guidance under the pelvis bone. Because of the issues that can occur we had a whole another set of doctors and nurses enter our room. NICU Peds, residents, nurses, etc. I'm surprised we got them all in there. We do the vacuum and four hard contractions, three different cuts and a whole lot of pushing he was finally born!! The dr was able to turn him just enough and he popped right out. They had to push him back in a while because he had the cord around his neck but came out with so much force. Apparently I impressed the doctors and nurses as they all told me there's not a lot of women that could do what I did and for how long. He was born at 12:07am on June 5th. Weighed 7lbs 2oz and was 18.5in long. He ended up having a hemorrhage on the top of his head from where the vacuum was. He seemed to be ok, but had to spend 8hrs in the NICU so they could monitor the blood pooling was getting re-absorbed. I was able to nurse and have skin to skin time before they took him away. As much as I missed him and wanted him with me it was nice to get to my recovery room and sleep until they brought him back to me in the morning. He checked out fine in the NICU and was back in my arms by 10am. Just in time for our first visitors. :). Baby Gaven is doing great, head is almost all healed and he is a pure joy. I, on the other hand, am very sore due to three episiotomies and some wonderful new hemorrhoids. Everyone says in a week I will feel about 90% better. I sure hope so, but not holding my breath. Below is a picture from the hospital.
