S/O Spitting Up

Opinions wanted please!!

DS1 was MSPI and had reflux really bad, but he never really spit up. DS2 spits up after almost every feeding and it doesn't seem to be large quantities so I'm assuming it's normal, and from TJ post I'm convinced it's also pretty common. Sooo, what I don't understand is that my pedi suggested that I may be over feeding him, and that is why he is spitting up. He was born at 7lbs 1 oz, went down to 6lbs 8oz, and now at 4 weeks is about 9lbs 6oz. Since I am already only feeding him off of one side every time we nurse, my pedi suggested that I start to stop him after a set amount of time. I don't know how I feel about that since I don't really know how much he's getting when he is eating. Plus, I've always heard that you can't overfeed a breastfed baby and now it seems that a lot of babies spit up so should I even be concerned that he does?
Can I get your thoughts on this?

One of the big rules of tandem nursing is to switch the sides so a baby doesn't get used to only eating on one side. But, I actually kept them on one designated side because of this issue. One of my breasts had a more intense let down than the other and DS2 (my spitter) struggled with it and gorged himself. I mostly pumped, but I did notice an improvement in his post nursing spit up when I switched him to my slower breast.

I don't know that the spit up is abnormal, but it might be worth calling a LC for advice before taking the pedi's advice (if you do take the advice). It just seems like a LC would have more knowledge on how this issue specifically impacts BFing babies. Not sure if it would help, but just a thought.

Thanks ladies! I wonder if he is gaining so fast - which is my pedi's main concern, because he is gorging due to my overactive let down, and thus eating more than he means too. Who knows! I think I will talk to a LC to see what she says. I don't think I'm comfortable "cutting him off" since I don't know how much he's actually eating. I've thought about just pumping and feeding him, but with a toddler at home also that just isn't a viable option for me.

I was always told you can't over feed a bf baby too. And if LO spits up the excess, fine. It's a laundry problem, but not a baby problem. Personally I wouldn't be comfortable limiting feedings.

If you have an over active let down, block feeding is exactly what you should be doing. Bf babies will stop when they are full; you are not over feeding him.

I always take a peds bfing advice with a big grain of salt.....they very often (not always) give bad information. Check with an LC if it makes you feel better, but it sounds like things are fine

I'm with TJ and kmc. Can't over feed a breastfed baby. Just do more laundry. He will figure it out. Stopping him short could make him hungry and mess with your supply.

Two of my EBF babies spit up quite a bit, but I would not have limited the amount of time I was nursing if my dr had advise me to do that. They grow out of it pretty quickly.

Some babies are just spitters.

DS#2 was MPSI and spit up alllllll the time....everywhere. DS#1 was a happy spitter. I could literally feed him an ounce and he would spit up, so obviously he wasn't being overfed.
