Their Eyes Were Watching God

I just finished reading it. It had a weird ending. Maybe that was just me? Anyone else read this?

  • I read it in college (10 years ago).  But I remember thinking the ending was really beautiful and poetic, but didn't make a lot of logical sense?  Something about Tea Cake, that was the guy's name right?

We had to read it, I want to say, my freshman year of high school.  So nearly 20 years ago.  Good grief, how is that possible.  I remember nothing about it, though.

ETA: I was thinking of another book that was freshman year. I think I read it later in HS.

  • I read it my senior year of high school, it was one of the most difficult books I've ever read because of the way the spoken dialect was written.   Other than that, I don't remember much about it.
  • We read it our senior year of high school, too. All I can remember is being totally embarrassed during the sex scene because I was a big ol' innocent prude.

I have died every day waiting for you. Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years. And all along I believed I would find you, time has brought your heart to me. I have loved you for a thousand years. I'll love you a thousand more.
  • Yes! The dialogue was tough for me too. Yeah, the ending was poetic but it was just sort of like, huh?

  • I had to read it as part of a literature class in high school. I remember I liked it. I re-read it later in college at some point since it was on my bookshelf. He gets bit by a rabid dog and she shoots him right? It's a good read. I love historical fiction though. This one was like a fictional biography too, which was an interesting way to write it.

  • Yeah. Then she goes on trial for his murder, is found not guilty and then it ends by saying her soul was set free or something. The dog bite was definitely unexpected.
