Traveling w/LO

Hi! I'm traveling home soon and was wondering what to do with the car seat base. United told me I would have to pay a checked baggage fee to check it with my luggage! That's $70 roundtrip! But I'm going for 2 weeks, so I don't want to be without it. What have you all done?

Re: Traveling w/LO

  • We're trying to figure out the same thing.  I think we're going to just do without it for a few weeks, and install the carseat using the no-base install.  Either that or we'll pack it up really well and mail it.

  • My carseat can be safely used in a car with or without a base. I would probably save the money and say no base.

  • I kept mine attached to the carseat and put it in a big carseat travel bag (from BRU, $13.99).

  • We checked the car seat attached to the base. There was no charge. It might depend on the airline.
  • I'm currently traveling with my LO. I did not bring the base (my car seat installs with or without it) and I'm so glad I didn't- one less thing to lug around!

  • I'd either carry it on or go without.  I never trust a car seat or anything related to it to checked baggage- you don't know if they drop it or what other extremes it might be exposed to.

I would absolutely not waste any money buying a new base or shipping one from home, especially since it's just as safe to use without the base (mine is, anyway).

  • We just did this last week. I wasn't going to bring it but we were going to be using the same car for our whole trip and it was a lot easier to snap in and out rather than deal with installing every time without the base. We brought LO to the airport and thru security with his car seat/stroller/base. Then we gate checked everything when we got there. We kept the base connected to the car seat for gate checking and kept the base in the stroller basket while roaming the airport. It worked for us and didn't cost anything that way
