Any LOs sleeping in Rock n Play at night?

Hi Moms! Are there any other newborns out there sleeping in a RnP at night? Our little girl (2.5 weeks old) only sleeps for about 2 hrs max at a time and hates being swaddled and hates the pack n play, so at night I've been putting her in her RnP next to our bed. But now I'm nervous that I shouldn't be doing this because the RnP is at an angle and not flat. Any other moms out there in this predicament?

Re: Any LOs sleeping in Rock n Play at night?

  • My daughter is also 2.5 weeks and that's what she's using. My son used it tilmhe was 4 months old. I use the boppy noggin with it during the day for naps while I'm watching to prevent flat head.

  • Yes, my DD sleeps in a RNP at night. I was planning on having her sleep in a bassinet instead, because we had a rough transition to the crib with DD1 (at 6 months old), but she sleeps so much better there. After we get her reflux under control, I am going to try to switch her back to the bassinet.

That's all DD will sleep in if not on DH or I. We're trying to transition her to her crib but it's very slow going.

  • Henry sleeps in a RnP. I thought the angle was a good thing. Maybe not when I want him to sleep in something flat...

  • My LO sleeps in one. He is 2.5 weeks. I'm not too worried. I am planning on having him try some naps in his crib during the day so he gets used to being in there. We will see.
  • B sleeps in one at night and flat for naps during the day in his own crib no problem.

  • Our LO sleeps in one in her room. She's three weeks old tomorrow and hates laying on her back. It's the only way we can get her to sleep more than an hour.

  • DD will be 6 weeks on Friday and sleeps in her RNP at night.

  • Yep. DS sleeps in one every night. We don't plan on transitioning him to the crib until he is 3 months old as per the doctors recommendation. Once he starts sleeping longer during the day I'm going to start having him nap in there
  • Our 3 wk old sleeps in one by our bed each night. She sleeps in a flatter bassinet thing during day and ill start putting her in crib during day in another week or so for naps to help transition. Want to have her in crib at night by 8 weeks. I go back to work at 10 weeks so will keep fingers crossed we won't have much trouble. I've heard ppl that do have issues and many that don't.
  • DS1 slept in the RnP for 3 months at night time. DS2 takes naps in it only.

  • Yep thanks to reflux it's the only thing DS will sleep in. I'll revisit putting him in the bassinet once we get the meds down and reflux under control.

I use it too, DS sleeps just fine... Didn't think about the transitioning though...maybe I'll have him nap in his crib...It'll get some use for the nursery too! right now its only used for morning diaper changes.   I have the dining room table as a downstairs diaper station so the nursery is only used to store clothes and that first diaper change of the day...not a bad idea!

  • Yep, RnP all the time so far. I've been trying to get him to sleep in the crib for naps here and there, but he just wakes up an squirms around when I do. He falls asleep in my arms otherwise.
  • 4 week old here! Rock n play for us until the past week, we did daytime naps in the crib. Last night we did crib all night. It was a long night! :) hoping the next few days our little guy will get used to the crib! He sure looks cute in it.

Thanks for all the responses! I got nervous BC of SIDS after I saw this: https://pediatricinsider.wordpress.com/2013/04/29/the-fisher-price-rock-n-play-sleeper-is-not-for-sleeping/

Did anybody discuss sleep in a RnP with their pediatrician? Wondering if I should call mine up to ask about this...

@yvanehtnioj I used a crib wedge to transition.  Stopped using the wedge like a month later.
  • Yep. My son slept in his RnP for 4 weeks and then we transitioned him into his crib with no issues. I actually think he sleeps better in his crib than he did in the RnP - though I'm not sure why. He absolutely did NOT like the pack n play to sleep in!

  • My daughter sleeps in. It's helped with her congestion. No complaints. My sister also used one with my nephew who's 3 and perfectly fine
  • My son is six weeks and sleeps in one every night. Whatever works.

  • My little guy won't sleep happily in anything. We have the RNP and I thought the whole point was to put them in that half sit-up position.

@haylo33‌ - did Dr recommend your DS to sleep in the RnP until 3 months, or just to be in same room with you for 3 mos?
  • DD has spent a lot of nights in the RNP and is there for daytime naps. I mentioned it to my pedi and she was not concerned. I've had her in the mapper part of the Pack n Play lately, and she seems to do fine there as well.

The doctor just meant to transition the baby around 3 months before habits develop and it becomes a lot more difficult. I told her the baby was sleeping in a RNP and she said those are nice to have right by the bed. Didn't mention anything about being dangerous or a SIDS risk
  • giggler25 I was concerned too, but when we were still at the hospital, they had LO in his bed on an angle. Then last week the pedi said that due to LO sleeping after each meal, that a 30 degree incline is the best thing to help with digestion. He suggested that and my DS doesn't even have reflux problems, so RnP is what we do!

We use the rnp at night. She naps in the pack n play, bouncy chair or on us. We told the doctor she's sleeping on it and she was fine with it.

  • DH just called our pediatrician and she said it was safe for our LO to sleep in the RnP
  • DS sleeps in his RnP many nights. He doesn't sleep as well in his crib since he is such a wiggly sleeper, even swaddled. I feel like the RnP cradles him and keeps him from moving around so much.

  • Related question - We are having problems with baby not sleeping anywhere for an extended period of time other than my arms. It's sweet, but mama needs her sleep! We have a Snuggabunny swing by Fisher Price, but LO is only content there for 15 - 30 minutes. The RnP looks very similar in the cradling aspect to swing, so my question is - do any of you own both and is there a significant difference between the swing and the RnP in terms of baby's positioning? I'm trying to determine whether my LO might like to sleep on the RnP or whether it would be a waste since I already know he doesn't love the swing.

  • Dd will be 4 weeks tomorrow and she sleeps in one. Out other 2 kiddos went straight to crib from the hosptial, so this whole 'sleeping in noir room' thing is very new to us. Dd hates her crib. Before the RnP, the way she would sleep is if she were on my chest. A fried suggested the RnP and it is magical :)

  • DD sleeps in hers by my bed every night and in her crib during the day for naps.
  • @MerryLove‌ DS2 doesn't like the swing, pnp, or rnp. Only way for us is on my chest or on his belly. Therefore, I'd suggest borrowing a rnp first before running out to purchase one--especially if your LO didn't like the swing. On that note, does he like sleeping in his side or belly?

  • @ho11yday‌ Thanks for the advice! I haven't tried letting him sleep on his side or belly yet for fear of SIDS, but maybe will try it for a nap when I'm nearby just to see. He does love sleeping (for naps only) in his boppy lounger which, unfortunately, is not recommended for sleeping, so I'm always constantly checking on him. I'm going to hold off on a RnP until I can test a friends per your advice. In the meantime...we had amazing success last night using a miracle blanket. I'm hoping for another good night tonight to confirm it wasn't just luck!
