Anyone deal with newborn and fever?

I have spiked a fever and DS's is up very slightly. DD was just sick with 103.6 so I am prepping for the worst. Anything I need to know? Really really want to avoid ER and spinal tap. Since we know a bug is going around the family maybe they will let us watch and wait? DS is 5 weeks 3 days.

Thanks for sharing - I am sorry you had to go through that. It does help to know it doesn't have to be a big deal.

  • My ped says notify for anything over 100.4 for the first 2 months.
  • We were told anything over 100.4 needs to be seen. Good luck!

  • We were told after a month we were ok as long as it wasnt above 103. DD 1 kept a temp of around 99.2-5 till she was about six month pedi says that was fine some have higher temps.but i agree a call to the pedi at the least so even if you dont have to go at least it will be on file.hang in there.
  • When DD was in the ER, the doc said a fever would mean spinal tap, at least 2 days in the hospital, and blood and urine cultures as well. I used to work in the peds ER, and it is truly not as scary as it sounds. I hope your LO can avoid it, though!

  • Sometimes docs will do a partial workup for sepsis, i.e. omit the lumbar puncture, if there's an obvious source of infection and known sick contacts. Hopefuly his temp stays below 100.4 so you don't have to worry about any of it!

  • Are you breastfeeding? It does help protect your LO. We just had a virus work it's way through our family. DD1 was sick for 10days, a few days into it I got it and DH did the following day. Then my mom came to visit and she got sick. We all had fever, chills, sore throat, cough, and congestion for about a week. DD2 was congested but her temp never went above 99.1, unlike the rest of us who were in bed sick.
